Truman: No. 5 on presidential ranking

Just in time for President’s Day, Show-Me son Harry S. Truman has been named among the top five best U.S. presidents in history by a panel of experts assembled by the C-SPAN network.

The original Mr. Buck Stops Here — born in Lamar, Mo. — was ranked No. 5 on the commander-in-chief ranking, falling behind the Roosevelt cousins, George Washington and Abe Lincoln, who was named the best president ever.

Truman, who presided over the end of World War II and the expansion of federal public housing programs, received high marks for crisis leadership and international relations.

The worst president ever is listed as James Buchanan, who failed to heal the north-south divisions that would lead to the Civil War.

The most recent ex-president, George W. Bush, had an overall rank of 36 out of 42 men to serve as president. Bush’s score in the foreign affairs category was second to last — only William Henry Harrison, who served just a month in office, fared worse.

This is not the first time that historians have rated President Truman our fifth-greatest President. He might have been surprised. Most surveys of historians rank him at least among the top ten Presidents. So far his successors have not given him any competition, in my unbiased opinion.
