Clergy call on Nixon to make good on promise to meet

When Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon was running for office, he promised that, if elected, he would sit down with a St. Louis clergy group, Metropolitan Congregations United, in his first three months in office.

“I pledge to meet with the leadership of MCU within the first 60 days of the first legislative session of my administration to discuss your vision for achieving these goals,” Nixon wrote to the group in October.

Well, 60 days has come and gone. On Monday, members of the clergy paid a visit to the governor’s St. Louis office in the downtown Wainwright Building, reminding a slightly befuddled staffer of the governor’s previous commitment.

I think we should all get together and help out the economy. Lets start by separating ourselves from this farce called religion. End the FREE tax breaks that these crooks use everyday. The amount of taxes we could raise by lifting the freebies that all of these organizations receive could eliminate the deficit.

While we are taking freedom of religion away why don’t we take your freedom of speech too. Your comment has nothing to do with the article.

Ah, the Elliot Davis style! Purpose: to cause embarrassment, not to actually meet with the Governor. Fifteen people show up with a camera just to make an appointment? I would have thought that a phone call would suffice.

I have to agree that in this instance, the Elliot Davis style was probably not appropriate. Now, if Gov. Nixon were to blow off the group and refuse to meet/ listen to them? Then all bets would be off. But, with the economy in shambles, it is reasonable to give the governor a little bit of slack.

As the the church tax-exempt status, they have no more and no less than any other not-for-profit. Unless you want to eliminate all non-profits tax exempt rights, Oe, you are barking up the wrong tree.

How abour making an appointment like any other professional person would do. Oh wait…maybe you expected god to pencil you in the governor’s appointment book. Get over yourself and don’t be such a diva.

It’s about accountability. The governor is accountable to fulfill his promise to meet within 60 days, and MCU has a responsibility to ensure he fulfills this promise. I am not involved in this, however, I would bet that the camera was not their first method of communication. The governor made a commitment in October before the election and I’m certain he enjoyed the votes of many of the MCU clergy and their congregations. He is now accountable. Great work MCU!

Nixon got their votes… now they actually expect him to honor his word?

Silly, silly, people.

If you are Black this is why you and your fellows NEED the Republican Party. Right now Nixon knows you have nowhere else to go… that come 2012 you’ll vote for him once again.

Nixon played you… Slay plays you… almost every other Democrat does as well. Until you… the Black Community… have and use a viable alternative, they will continue to do just that.

You get what you deserve…

These people need to get real, there is a protocol that they have to follow and not just show up at an office and expect to be let in to see the Governor.

Religious groups need to be taxed, plain and simple.
