DOJ drops federal voting lawsuit against Robin Carnahan
JEFFERSON CITY — A long-standing debate between Republicans and Democrats over voting issues took another turn today as the Department of Justice dropped a 2005 federal lawsuit that had been filed against Secretary of State Robin Carnahan.
The suit alleged that Carnahan didn’t follow federal law by failing to force counties to properly update their voting rolls, leaving the possibility that ineligible voters could cast ballots. Carnahan had called the suit a waste of time, and noted that there were plenty of procedures in place to protect the voting process.
The suit got tied up in the national controversy over the firing of several U.S. attorneys by former President George W. Bush. Then-U.S. attorney Todd Graves questioned the merits of the suit.
Carnahan today praised the decision to drop the suit:
“I am pleased the Department of Justice has decided to drop this lawsuit. Since it was originally filed in 2005, I have maintained that the lawsuit is unnecessary, unwise and costly.
The decision to drop this suit is long overdue. A prior ruling found my office not only complied with federal law but also went beyond its requirements through our many efforts to assist county clerks and election boards with their responsibilities.
Missourians can rest assured that I will continue to work with local election officials to ensure fair and accurate elections in our state.”

For those who argued that this lawsuit was political to begin with, when Robin was merely a Sec. of State, I would think there could be an argument made that it is just as political for the Obama administration to drop it, now that she is a candidate for the United States Senate.
I really don’t know whether or not the case ever had merit, but this whole thing stinks from both ends.
Poor Robin, she is just a mess! Remember when she said that there was no voter fraud in Missouri. Was that that the truth? She doesn’t even know how to write ballot language. A judge has ended up doing it for her. And SHE wants to be a SENATOR! I think not, stay home and start a family.
What Jim said… AND
Notice while printing the Carahan side of the story we get nothing from the other side…
The ACORN/Democratic ‘vote machine’ is now free to pervert elections in Missouri.
Great news for Robin.
Bad news for Roy “The Marylander” Blunt. Now if we can just get Blunt’s goons to repay the $1.6 million they owe us for paying their legal fees in the Eckersly hit job will be in good shape.
Stay in Maryland Roy. It’s better for you there.
Let’s see….Obama is in office just 6 weeks, and amazingly the lawsuit from the Dept. of Justice against Robin Carnahan for not cleaning up the voter rolls in the state of Missouri get dropped…how convenient. Now she will have all those dead people and dogs that she is keeping on the rolls vote for her in 2010 and she is in! Way to go Robin!
