Horse slaughter resolution gets full Mo. Senate approval
JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Senate passed Sen. Wes Shoemyer’s resolution that encourages the federal government to allow horse slaughter 31-0.
“It’s one of the most impractical things,” Shoemyer, D-Clarence, said. “It just doesn’t make any good common sense whatsoever.”
Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Lee’s Summit, agreed.
“I think this — and there’s no kidding in my voice — maybe one of the most important thing we’ve done this year,” Bartle said. “This is is Exhibit A for the stupidity of the federal government.”
“If they start making decisions about human beings like they make decisions about horses, God help us,” he added about the federal government.
Bartle pointed to the cost of keeping horses alive and said that money could instead go to more important issues such as health care.
We’re still getting comments on the last post about this resolution, so check those out.

Talk about stupid? Supporting horse slaughter is right up there. Thankfully, our federal legislators are smarter than those who supported this joke of a measure. If this is the most important things MO legislators did I think you should go home and stop wasting our time. We need to ban horse slaughter and stop the cruelty. This industry only goes to fill the pockets of foreign owned companies. Congrats Missouri! You are the best friends of the French high end restaurant owners. To bad you ignore US horse owners and the American public. Folks should see what industry you just defended and remember it when they vote next time. Visit http://www.every5minutes.org.
Apparently Sens. Shoemyer and Bartle think it is important to poison Europeans, have blood backing up in bathtubs near a plant, and promote horse theft.
Or maybe they just want to get a letter from the king of Belgium like the Illinois legislature did?
Sadly, despite claims to help end the export of U.S. horses over the border to unacceptable conditions of slaughter, especially in Mexico, these resolutions actually encourage their continued export. Missouri’s resolution states that it “urges Congress to oppose any introduced legislation that would restrict the transportation and processing of horses in the US and internationally.”
What really makes no good common sense are the ignorant and uninformed state legislators passing these resolutions. Hopefully members of the U.S. Congress will see the true intentions of these resolutions, and will swiftyly pass federal legislation to prohibit horse slaughter in the U.S. as well as to prohibit their transport and export over the borders. HR 503, The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009, must be swifty passed through Congress and a Senate bill must follow.
So, this guy is saying we should slaughter our horses and donate the money to health care? How about people get jobs and pay for their own health care. I’ll keep my horses thank you.

I honestly don’t know why he got elected. Many of the folks I talk to from his district (and I grew up in the Lee’s Summit area) think he’s a moron. Bartle is Exhibit A for stupidity. Maybe we should build a horse slaughter plant in Lee’s Summit, I’m sure his constiuents would be so happy to know he supports the industry.
I can say that personally, I testified last year at the house committe meeting on this resolution. Shoemyer is the most immature person elected to office. During my testimony where we were able to dispute all the claims he has made he mocked me and turned this meeting into a circus. All the lobbyists from the Cattlemans association, farmers groups, etc. were there. WE had documentation to prove everything he and his lobbyists testified to were wrong. Our MO lawmakers dont care. this is about what they want. There wasnt much political support on the house side for this in the St. LOuis area. If you care about this, please call your representatives and tell them how you feel. This is about the humane treatment of these animals. The facts speak for themselves. That cannot be disputed. OUr lawmakers just choose to ignore that.
Currently more U.S. horses are going to slaughter in Canada and Mexico than were slaughtered in previous years when we had 3 slaughterhouses in the U.S.
The thing is, according to FDA’s food safety laws it’s illegal to commercially slaughter unregulated animals for human consumption. Horses routinely receive medications that are strictly banned from food animals, the result is adulterated meat that’s hazardous to human health. That’s illegal. The USDA, FDA, AVMA, FSIS, etc, have all been turning a blind eye for decades and not enforcing food laws on the horse slaughter industry. A day in court will straighten that out, then everyone who sells a horse to slaughter, or slaughter buyers who resell to slaughterhouses, will risk fines and prosecution for animals with illegal drug residues.
‘government’?
I don’t think so… these barbaric individuals who form the Missouri Senate are immoral, unethical & cruel MONSTERS!
Animals are not the problem, it is a PEOPLE problem. Sadly, it seams that ALL of Earth’s creatures suffer from our mistakes.
The thought of the possibility of horse slaughtering becoming legal again sickens me. These sen. need to get facts together before thinking this is a good idea. Anyone who thinks that the slaughtering of horses is a good idea obvously do not know what goes on at the slaughter houses. Horses are abused, neglected, have their necks slashed, shackled, and allowed to bleed to death. Many times they are skinned alive. How is this okay? How is it okay to treat a living creature like this? Maybe we should start doing away with people who are a nusance to society like we do horses. And who does this Bartle think is paying to “keep horses alive”? Let me tell you who, it’s not the government. So if he thinks that I am going to get rid of my horses to have them slaughtered and contribute the money that I would have been spending on them to health care - he’s nuts!
