NRA chips in for alderman who urged residents to get guns

ST. LOUIS — It’s not everyday that one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington weighs-in on a city ward contest.

But it’s also not typical for an urban Democrat to encourage constituents to start toting firearms.

Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe — who recently made a pitch for residents in his crime-plagued ward to get their concealed weapons permitreceived a $500 campaign contribution from the National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund earlier this month.

In Tuesday’s Democratic primary, Troupe faces a tough challenge from former alderman Sharon Tyus, whose previous seat in the old 20th Ward was a casualty of ward redistricting.

A few hundred dollars barely registers on the target for a political giant like the NRA.

Wonder if it would have been worth it for the group to stock Troupe’s campaign arsenal even more — contributing something like, say, $25,000. That’s still a small amount for the nation’s largest gun lobby, but it would have packed a serious PR punch.

A hat tip to the Arch City Chronicle, which reported the NRA contribution earlier as part of its relentless scouring of campaign finance reports.

Between 1999 and 2005, homicides involving firearms among black men ages 25 to 44 increased 31 percent….

And the NRA can only give $500 for such success.

This Knee Grow is the biggest sellout in STL’s northside community.
Tyus is a nut job. I hope the ward find someone more suitable.

Garrison — once again the idiot!

I’m sure that if you re-checked your “statistics,” you’d find that none of those murders were committed by responsible, law-abiding gun owners.

What’s that old saying — my gun has killed fewer people than Ted Kennedy’s car!

Perhaps Garrison should go for a ride up in Hyannis.

Seriously, Garrison .. is there ANYTHING about you that isn’t filled with hate and venom??

God forbid someone have an opinion contrary to your own.

What an amazing hit piece against an honest alderman! The author acknowledges the small size of the NRA contribution but then finds a way to throw in a giant, purely speculative “gosh number” amount just for the emotional impact. A classic tactic of false propaganda.

Want to really discuss giants getting involved in that aldermanic race? How about the value of ink by the truckload? What’s the value of the endorsements by the Post-Dispatch for professional victim Sharon Tyas if she had to buy that much ad space? I’ll bet it’s far more than the paltry amount the NRA gave to Alderman Troupe.

The Post is just angry because Troupe had the honesty and integrity to acknowledge that the only thing that will cut crime in his ward is for citizens to take responsibility for their own self defense.

Jim..hillarious!
Right before calling me an idiot, you claim I’m “hate filled and full of venom”….With the nerve to oppose contrary opinions.

I wish you lived on Sarah Avenue and your Alderman decided to hand-out loaded handguns to your neighbors….You know, to make you feel safe.

Garrison, that last one was over the line. You’re a real jerk.

Tell me “what’s over the line” Nick.
Wishing Jim lived on Sarah… or making sure more guns are on our streets?

Of course you all know that the NRA drops off guns and ammunition in predominately black neighborhoods with hopes that blacks will kill each other.

If by magic you could make every gun in the world disappear, black men ages 25-44 would kill each other with machetes. Garrison knows that, but he would prefer to hate on law abiding citizens.

“They would kill each other with machetes”.
Good one Looney…
What about blowing darts through a bamboo or throwing spears?
