Tension in the governor’s office? A Bear lurks among Tigers

Everyone in Jefferson City knows that Gov. Jay Nixon is a rabid Tiger fan — he even predicted Mizzou would make the NCAA Tournament.

It’s no secret, than, who he’ll be rooting for when the basketball team opens up tournament play against Cornell later this week in Boise.

But will everybody in Nixon’s office be wearing black and gold?

Turns out one of Nixon’s closest aides has ties to the Cornell, champions of the Ivy League conference.

Jeff Harris, Nixon’s state policy director, hails from Columbia, but his law school degree is actually from Cornell, located in upstate New York.

Last month, Harris told the school’s student paper that “Cornell broadened my horizons and my perspective.”

Maybe so, but don’t expect for the type of talk to get Harris very far in the “Governor’s Box” at Mizzou Arena.

Other notable Cornell alum with political ties include Bush defense department official Paul Wolfowitz, former attorney general Janet Reno and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Meanwhile,  three siting U.S. governors are Mizzou grads — Nixon, Oregon’s Ted Kulongoski, and Virginia’s Tim Kaine, who was also recently named head of the Democratic National Committee.

Please fix the elementary-school mistake in punctuation in the first sentence of the last paragraph. (Got it! Thanks — JAKE)

What a weasel. I knew Harris wasn’t from these parts. Now we learn that Harris’ liberal outrageous policy views for Missouri were shaped by a bunch of elite snobbish Yankees. Nice going Jay Nixon. GO MIZZOU!

Stay cool, Miss Verna. The Tigers will whip the effete “Yankees”. Then Mr. Harris can be extra-proud of his “Yankee” diploma after the Tigers take Cornell to “graduate school.”

Yeah, MissVerna -
In keeping with his ursine urges, I hear tell Mr. Harris also has a Covert Cubbie Cloisonne which he rubs whenever those Northside Nasties play the Consecrated Cardinals.

Harris was born and raised in Columbia, MO. To say that he “isn’t from these parts” is absolutely untrue. And to say his views were shaped by a “bunch of elite snobbish Yankees” indicates exactly how your views were shaped: in a biased, uneducated, and narrow way. Keep it civil. Go Tigers.

MU Fan…get a life, then get a sense of humor. Pretty sure all of these posts have been sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek. I’m sure Jeff is laughing at them all. No one is debating or doubting his sense of dedication to the Columbia area. And this is coming from someone who disagrees with probably 99% of Jeff’s views.

Effete? Outrageous! I nearly spilled my mid-morning tea all over my ascot.

Seriously, though, as one of many Cornell grads living in St. Louis I feel I speak for all of us when I say: we’re taking the points. Go Big Red! Cover that spread!
