Joan Bray promises to filibuster campus concealed carry

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri Sen. Joan Bray said today that she would filibuster a bill that would allow for concealed carry on college campuses.

Bray spoke briefly at a press conference put on by anti-concealed carry advocates, including Colin Goddard, a student who was a shot four times during the Virginia Tech shooting two years ago.

Goddard said legislation such as HB668 wouldn’t have prevented the Virginia Tech shooting, but is rather a knee-jerk reaction.

“I can only imagine the day would be crazier with multiple people with guns,” he said.

University of Missouri-Columbia student Brian Roach called the measure a “chilling prospect.”

“This is not only shortsighted, but fundamentally dangerous,” said Roach, who is president of the MU College Democrats and a member of the student government.

John Johnson of the national Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus said allowing students to keep guns could lead to more successful suicides.

Might have been a good idea to disclose that Brain Roach is not just a random student at Mizzou, but also and officeholder with the Young Democrats of Missouri and is involved the College Democrats.

That kind of reporting of facts is important in journalism, right?

Maybe you could actually try reading the entire 7 lines before criticizing Ms. Moring because that is exactly what it states…that Roach is president of the Mizzou College Dems. Typical righty, having their own screwed up version of the truth.

(No, sorry — I was editing the post as in the know was posting, so when they commented it wasn’t up yet. –RM)

Mr. Goddard is correct. HB668 would not have prevented the VT shooting. It MAY have limited the carnage. But, we will never know as VT was a Gun-Free School. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the shooter that…..

Mr. know -
Of course, one of the advocates of the CCW law for college kids is:
“University of Missouri-Columbia student Jonathan Ratliff, who proposed the legislation to Munzlinger…..said Ratliff, chairman of the Missouri College Republicans.”
I’d say he is not a “random student” either…

The quote about the campus CCW proponent is from an 041809 article in the P-D.

I don’t see how MORE guns on campus is going to make the campus more safe.

What next high school carry? Kindergarten carry?

Why not just let the schools decide what they want on their campus?

With all the binge drinking and other reckless behavior that happens on our college campuses, why would we want to add guns to the mix?

For the record, I am a very liberal Democrat. In fact, I myself am a member of the Young Democrats of Missouri, that’s how I knew who Brian Roach was. And I disagree with this bill, and I’m thrilled that Sen. Bray is going to filibuster it.

I am just sick to death of conservatives complaining that the PD is a liberal rag. So, I hate it when reporters mess up in a way that gives them more ammunition to make those claims. Ms. Moring is an intern, and should appreciate such constructive criticism, as she learns.

And by the way, Mr. Maher, why would you assume I’m a ‘Mr.’?

You better take away the privilige of college students from owning a car as well. Afterall, one may binge drink and then decide to drive.

I said this yesterday elsewhere. 80% of the members of my fraternity owned firearms, had them present in the house and hunted often. 99% of the members also drank heavily at times. At NO time was carelessness with firearms tolerated in our house. If you were drinking, the guns were in the safe. If you showed an ounce of carelessness with your guns, you found a new place to live. PERIOD.

For you folks to blanket paint all college students with the “not responsible enough to own a firearm” is simply foolish. Many students do not engage in reckless behavior. Yet you are perfectly content in denying those responsible students a legal means of protection because there is a minute chance someone will act carelessly.

Wouldn’t that require intelligible talk?

Ms./Mr. know -
To be polite, one must give SOME title to whom one is addressing; I dare say a female writer would address another unknown-gender person as Ms. (or another feminine title).
Sadly, many writers here avoid polite forms of address.

I do agree with your intent - Bully!
