JEFFERSON CITY — Just after they passed legislation to abolish the Missouri income tax, the House of Representatives approved a bill to get rid of sales tax for the month of July.

The first proposal, sponsored by Rep. Ed Emery, R-Lamar, would institute what he calls a “Fair Tax.” If passed by the Senate, it would go to a statewide referendum. Rep. Chris Kelly, D-Columbia, pushed for the tax on the other side of the aisle.

The second bill, an Independence Day tax holiday, was sponsored by Rep. Mike Sutherland, R-Warrenton.

Democrats criticized the passages two tax approaches.

“We’re just all over the place when it comes to our tax policy,” Minority Leader Paul LeVota said.

Paul Levota demonstrating why he is the leader of the minority party - they aren’t intellectually dishonest - or they really are that stupid.

Anybody with half a brain - hmmmm - can figure out that the sales tax holiday is needed now because we not only pay income tax but also sales taxes and property taxes etc. If you go to a sales tax only basis - eliminating the income tax - the sales tax holiday’s would also likely go away.

The intellectual dishonesty exhibited by LeVota is in not acknowleding - as Rep. Emery tried to tell him and others but they weren’t interested in the facts - that if the proposal is approved by the voters - the legislature has a year to adjust things such as the sales tax holiday’s which would no longer be needed.

So which is it Rep. LeVota - dishonesty or ignorance?
