JEFFERSON CITY — As reported on the Mother Ship this morning, state Rep. Michael Corcoran, D-St. Ann, has been charged with drunk driving related to a traffic stop that occurred on Feb. 6 in St. Louis County.

Corcoran’s attorney says he’ll fight the charge.

But just facing the charge doesn’t bode well for Corcoran’s political future. Corcoran is one of three Democrats who has announced his intention to run for the 24th District state Senate seat in 2010. The seat is currently occupied by Sen. Joan Bray, D-University City. She is unable to run again because of term limits. The last Missouri Democrat to run for Senate shortly after a DWI charge was Sen. Chuck Graham, D-Columbia, an incumbent who lost a close race to Republican challenger Kurt Schaefer. Graham’s drunk driving incident was a prominent element of Schaefer’s campaign.

Besides Corcoran, former state Rep. Sam Page and Barbara Fraser, both Democrats, have announced they plan to seek the seat.

The day of the alleged DWI happened to be the same day that the Kansas City Star first wrote a story about state Rep. Jeanette Mott Oxford, D-St. Louis, not being allowed to be the ranking Democrat on the children and families committee. Corcoran wasn’t mentioned in that story, but he was in the column I wrote about the incident a few days later. Corcoran said he was put on the committee by Speaker Ron Richard by his request. The request put Corcoran in hot water with some of his fellow Democrats.

Mike Corcoran is one of the most respected individuals i have had the pleasure of knowing. Mike Corcoran is known as a stalwart when it comes to working on everything from children’s services to early voting.
Mike Corcoran’s type of leadership would be a devastating loss for MO.
Mr Corcoran we will pray for you’re guidance. GOD BLESS.

When you run for and hold public office, you are held to a higher standard. This is something that all of us, who have held office at one time or another, understand. If you are S T U P I D enough to drink and drive with the title Rep., Senator or Congressman in front of your name, then you get the public drubbing you earned.

I personally think anyone who holds elective office and is found guilty of drunken driving should forfit their office. Too bad, so sad for the politician that cannot seem to put the drink glass down.

Back in the day, everyone (elected official or not) was subject to the scrutiny when charged with DWI or DUI. I remember my mother reviewing that each morning–so maybe it was the Globe.

If you drink and drive, you should not cower from the (negative) publicity of such a charge. And this stands whether or not the person is an elected official, a professional athlete, or vinyl siding salesman.

Were I a vinyl-siding salesman, I’d take offense at being compared with politicians and professional athletes.

Mike Corcoran is a tool and does only the bidding of his union thug bosses.

We, the people of Missouri, lose nothing if his political career is over.

As a contributor to Mike Corcoran’s bid for State Senator, I certainly would not have given money had I known about the incident of February 6.
