JEFFERSON CITY — A source close to Sarah Steelman told the Political Fix today that the former state treasurer has enlisted Washington, D.C., lawyer Ben Ginsberg to form an exploratory committee for a run for U.S. Senate.

Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post’s “The Fix” blog first reported the news via his Twitter feed.

Steelman has been talking about the race for a couple of months. This week, her new Web site made its debut, and while it didn’t mention a Senate run, it referred to two social networking sites that said “Sarah Steelman for Senate.”

Steelman would face Republican Congressman Roy Blunt in a primary. Blunt announced he would run for the seat being vacated by Sen. Kit Bond shortly after Bond announced he wouldn’t seek re-election in 2010. But Blunt’s first quarter fund-raising fell far short of Democrat Robin Carnahan’s totals.

In recent days, Blunt and Carnahan have been exchanging barbs over various positions, with both candidate ignoring a potential Steelman candidacy.

Ginsberg was chief counsel for Bush-Cheney ticket in 2004. He was also involved in the “Swift Boat” campaign against former presidential candidate John Kerry.

Sarah Steelman needs to enroll in a public speaking class before she does anything else. I am not a fan of Roy Blunt but I might have to vote for him in the primary vs. someone who can barely put together coherent sentences. Either way, me and lots of other Republicans will be holding our noses when we vote!

So Sarah “Spoiler” Steelman has to get in the race, eh? Just like last time, she’ll lose the primary - but she’ll force Blunt to spend big bucks to defeat her, forcing him to race double what Carnahan raises just to make it even, and leaving him weakened by her negative attacks in November. And of course, when she loses the primary, she’ll again refuse to support the party’s nominee.

If I was supporting Carnahan, I’d send Steelman a big check.

Kasoff, I am sick and tired of seeing your posts on here. Your arguement is flawed. Why doesn’t Roy leave the race? It is a two sided coin. Hulshof lost because was way too soft on Nixon. Get over it.

NO ONE SHOULD SUPPORT STEELMAN, WHEN SHE HIRES POLITICAL HIT MEN LIKE JEFF ROE.

NO WAY, DOES ANYONE WANT JEFF ROE RUNNING THIS STATE! WAKE UP PEOPLE

Nick get used to it with or without Sarah Steelman in this race Blunt can’t beat Young Lady Carnahan. Blunt is too closely tied to the FAILED Bush presidency. Hulsof was a DC insider, tied to Bush he NEVER had a chance. If anyone thinks Jeff Roe controls Sarah Steelman, I doubt they’ve had much to do with either person. If public speaking skills is all one considers in casting their ballot, one would suppose ”skeptical” voted for President Obama. The only hope the Republicans have to hold the ”Bond” seat is Sarah Steelman. Blunt is just Kenny Hulsof part two.

Blunt has got to go away.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. If “Jay” Nixon does not committ to appointing the first African American to a state wide position, blacks should sit this one out. Democrate can’t win without black votes, yet the black vote continues to be ignored. If Robin Carnahan becomes U.S. Senator from MO, she will have to vacate her position of Secretary of State, which will allow Governor Nixon the opportunity to appoint the first African American to a state wide post, Secretary of State. I’m throwing my support behind, Maida Coleman, Iren Smith or Rev. Elston McCowan, all three ran for mayor of the city of St. Louis when others were afraid.

I wish Roy Blunt wasn’t the candidate out there right now. I don’t really care for him too much. And I think he’s the wrong standard-bearer for Missouri GOP politicians. But, if it comes down to Blunt v. Carnahan, I’ll hold my nose and vote for him.

And if Sarah Steelman wins the GOP primary…well, Robin gets my vote. Nick got it exactly right. Whether Hulshof won the general election is irrelevant to my perception of Steelman. She lost any chance of my vote for the primary when she attacked Hulshof personally-a man I know to be a great individual, a good public servant, and someone who I was proud to have as my representative in Washington. He didn’t deserve it, but what are ethics or decency when you have a race to win?

But I would have been willing to give her a chance in future elections-that is, until she conducted herself the way she did after she lost. Instead of ponying up and saying that Hulshof would be better than Nixon, she took her ball and went home–and then used her office to try and settle personal/political vendettas. I’m through with her-as far as I’m concerned, politically, she’s dead to me.

After all the dreck the Bond/Hulsof party pulled on Sarah Steelman in the primary, what did SMC expect Her to do? Kow Tow to the “good ole boys”? Hulsof may be a great guy, but he was/is a DC insider, part of the Bush regime that brought us a larger, free spending, overly intrusive Federal government. Between Nixon and Hulsof there was NO choice. Does it tell you anything when Kinder is the only Republican to win statewide?

Reality check has a good point. I am not wild about our prospects with Roy, but one thing I do know, is that when your campaign/governing is headed up by Jeff Roe… there is a problem.

But in Roe’s defense, there are few (if any) politicians in Jefferson City (with power) whose campaigns/politics aren’t governned by SOME consultant. That is on both sides of the aisle!
