Ill. Manufacturers look to regain state funding
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Illinois manufacturers and state lawmakers gathered this morning to call on the governor and legislative leaders to restore $2 million in funding for a group that helps improve manufacturing business in the state.
As the May 31 state budget deadline looms, expect many groups to ramp up their calls (in this economy, it’s more like pleas) to keep or increase their share of state funding.
IMEC, the Illinois Manufacturing Extension Center, which has ten offices throughout the state, is asking for $2 million in next year’s budget. This is the minimum amount needed, they say, to allow them to draw on federal funding and apply for other grant money.
IMEC helps more than 400 manufacturing companies each year streamline operations, introduce new technologies, train staff and provide continuing education for management.
Brad Albrecht, vice president of finances at Budnick Converting in Columbia, Ill., said IMEC helped his company redesign their plant floor and trained the staff and managers.
IMEC president Bob Weinstein said research has shown that for every $1 the state invests in IMEC produces $4 in state and local taxes as the companies become more efficient and prosperous.
“Manufacturing is the core of our state’s economy … and it’s hurting right now,” said Weinstein. ”A little program like IMEC has a phenomenal impact.”
IMEC was formed in 1994 and received state funding until last year. Weinstein said his organization is in discussions with Gov. Pat Quinn to try to restore the funding.
