Rep. Clay: Divorce “should not have come as a surprise”
ST. LOUIS — U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay issued a comment this afternoon in response to allegations from his wife that he did not tell her — or their children — about his filing for divorce.
In a statement issued through a spokesman, Clay suggested that last week’s divorce
filing should not have taken his wife, Ivie Clay, off guard.
“This is a time of great sadness for my family and me. My wife and I have been discussing this situation for a number of months and this action should not have come as a surprise to anyone. Of course, my first concern is for our children, whom I love dearly, and for their peace & privacy. I will continue to be a devoted father to them, and I hope that the public will understand that this is a difficult, private family matter that will hopefully be resolved amicable and swiftly by all parties.”

Why is it that responders get personal? Isn’t this a forum that everyone can use to comment on the article? Let’s stay focused and leave the back biting, negative attacks to the politicans, shall we?
I think we should elect individuals with a steadier moral compass. If we vote in weak minded individuals, we will get negative results. Let’s reward morally upright, community focused, level-headed individuals with these seats.
It is unfortuniate that Mr. Clay’s marriage, or any others, end in divorce. What is fortuniate, is that in our society, divorce is NOT the end to ones political career that it may have been in the past. What is sad for me is that Mr. Clay and others like McCain, Guliani, Limbaugh, Gingrich, and just about any Hollywood star can be married/divorced as much as they want But my gay friends who have been together for over 20 years cannot.
I have never voted Republican in my life but I will on the next election. Un-Rep. Lacy Clay has shown is total lack of class. He and his “values” do not represent me. I can’t wait for the national press (FOX) to get ahold of this. Lacy Clay do the right thing and resign.
Lacy Clay, how dare you lie to your voters. You know and I know they had no idea of this mess. Your statement is only begging for support for votes. You and your staff need to keep this real and tell the truth and the whole truth. Answer us on why you haven contacted the kids. The two that whom you love so dearly. Wake you, Missouri is tried of your bull…..
First concern is your children? Loving and Devoted Father? Their Peace???
I am nauseous and want to vomit.
Lacy,
I just called your home and your kids still not have heard from you.
You had time to release this weak statement, why can’t you pick up the phone and call them. What is wrong with you??? Have you lost your mind???
I was quick to judge Clay and must apologize.
I should have considered that nothing is usually as it appears on the surface just from personal experience alone.
According to his wife’s letter, their attorneys had been in talks before the filing of his papers so; it was no surprise to her that a divorce was coming. They both appear to have left the children out and he could have let her know that he had filed the papers before others learned of it. There had to be some kind of miscommunication with Alan Mandel being out the country and all, probably his brother filing it or some other person in that office who dropped the ball not notifying the wife’s attorney.
I am very saddened that they could not work it out. Divorce is a very cruel thing to do to a faithful and loyal wife, if this is what she was according to her statement.
I wish you all had as much hate towards John Edwards. Why are you all being so hard on Clay? You don’t know the whole story. This is his personal life. Doesn’t the PD and society have bigger things to worry about such as Bill Donius’s alternative sex life. Geez!
Why seal the file, Lacy? Afraid that your conduct, which could be revealed in these proceedings, might have an adverse impact on your political future? Mr. Mandel’s statement that he just wanted to protect your financial information simply doesn’t hold water.
Remember this, Congressman:
Heav’n has no rage like love to hatred turn’d
Nor Hell a fury, like a woman scorn’d.
“I have never voted Republican in my life but I will on the next election. Un-Rep. Lacky Clay has shown is total lack of class.”
Vote his a$$ out in the primary, that way he is good and gone, and you can still vote straight ticket dem, no matter how screwed up things are by then.
D. Walker, I do not follow your point.
Whether the attorneys talked does not matter. High profile people, always have attorneys. The kids probably thought that they were separated which has happened before and always with a reconciliation.
Why couldn’t the Congressman have called his kids and said that I filed today for a divorce from your mother. I know there will be some mean people and unkind comments so be prepared and know that I want the best for you. Instead a teenager said she saw it on the internet. That is unexcusable.
And by the way, he still hasn’t called them last check. If you think this is ok, something is wrong with you.
