Former governor, senator and U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft compared his decisions in the Bush administration after 9/11 to those of President Harry S Truman in a commencement speech this weekend.

Fittingly, the speech was made to graduates on Saturday at Truman State University, the Kirksville, Mo. school named for the famous son of Independence.

‘We had to ask ourselves, ‘Are there things that we should be doing in order to safeguard the freedoms of the United States?’” Ashcroft said. “Are we willing to make tough decisions, like the decision made by the namesake of Truman for this institution, which made a monumental difference for mankind?”

Though some students refused to applaud and turned their backs, the prominent Republican received a mostly congenial response. Truman honored Ashcroft with an honorary degree, only the second in the school’s history.

Ashcroft’s former Democratic rival, the late Gov. Mel Carnahan, will receive a posthumous degree from Truman in a ceremony at a later date. For more on Ashcroft’s commencement speech, read our education blog, The Grade.

Spoiled twerpy students. There should be a law mandating two year armed service time after high school graduation, and for dropouts 17 years of age and older. I’m sick of the ignorant me me me self indulgence of kids. Make them pay before they earn.;

Harry Truman was a mass murderer. So is John Ashcroft.

Bulletinman, the poster boy for spoiled twerpy students, an example of someone who should have been sentenced to serve time in the armed forces and sent to the Phillipines, circa 1942.
