Danforth endorses Blunt at ritzy GOP fund-raiser

JEFFERSON CITY — Say this about Roy Blunt: He knows the art of the deal.

A few weeks ago, when I wrote about the impending train wreck facing the Missouri GOP — last night’s Spirit of Enterprise fund-raiser honoring former Sen. John C. Danforth — Blunt pointed out that Danforth, who was in the midst of a statewide tour bashing Blunt, had left the door open to eventually endorsing him.

“Jack has some credibility,” Blunt said then of Danforth. “He has left the door open to eventually say I am the best candidate.”

Indeed, that’s what Danforth did last night, according to Republicans in attendance at the big dinner at the Ritz-Carlton. After a rousing introduction video, Danforth “took the gloves off on Obama,” said one GOP operative, and offered an endorsement of Blunt.

Late last night, Blunt spokesman Rich Chrismer issued a statement from Blunt thanking Danforth for his endorsement.

“Senator Danforth’s public service to our state and to our nation has been tremendous and it means a lot to me to have his personal support and endorsement.  I have appreciated Jack’s warm personal friendship through the years and am very much looking forward to campaigning with him.”

The move leaves Danforth’s protege, Thomas Schweich, as a possible candidate without a race. The Washington University law professor is said to be mulling a run for auditor, where he would face Democrat Susan Montee in the general election, should there be no Republican primary.

And Sarah Steelman, the on-again, off-again candidate for, well, something? She lay low.

You can’t always have the GOP ‘destroying itself’

No, no, no! Total new blood is what is needed in Washington and most everyone with with more than seven years need to go and only the people have the power to do it and I am talking about all Democrats and Republicans. I would stay home before I would voted for Blunt as the Republican candidate.

D.Walker - I agree with you 100%! When Blunt first announced his intention to run for Kit Bond’s Senate seat, my first thought was why in the world would the Republicans want this guy on the ticket? He’s was the House majority whip for most of the Bush administration and pushed all of the ridiculous spending that went on and now we’re supposed to make him a Senator? He needs to go to the house and let someone else run. With Blunt as the Republican candidate, I can just about guarantee we’re going to have 2 female, Democrat senators from MO.

Lest you forget Mr. Danforth considers himself a man of the clothe yet he keeps company with Mr. Blunt who divorced his wife, and married a tobacco lobbyist. This same lobbyist arranged a do nothing job for his son at a large salary. Mr. Blunt is unfit for any position that is dignified by law. He supports for profit the murder of over 435,000 Americans a year at the hands of the tobacco interest. Furthermore, as Republicans both of these men are in Union with the Tory part a fascist organization, and the Colorado party which has ties to Nazi war criminals of the worst sort. These men are the worst sort of murderers and belong in prison not on the public payroll.

Mullarkey - First of all, Danforth is an Episcopalian. His denomination does not prohibit divorce, or smoking. And I wouldn’t exactly call what the tobacco industry does “murder” … the sale of a legal product with adverse health effects is something of which plenty of other companies are guilty, including most corporate food manufacturers. And last time I checked, you could buy snack cakes, port rinds, and soda with food stamps - so the government is guilty too.

But hey, Mullarkey, thanks for destroying the false notion held by many Republicans, that if they can just be “moderate” enough then everyone will love them. In fact, left-wing partisans such as yourself and the Post-Dispatch editorial board would support a crook over a Republican, as was demonstrated in the last Illinois gubernatorial race.

Can’t wait to see Robin’s TV ads with Blunt hugging Tom Delay.

If Tony is going to rip off Columbia Tribune publisher Hank Waters’ long-time - and smart and cleverly-written - adaptation of “He Lay Low” in reference to someone hiding in the weeds, he should give Hank appropriate credit. Hank certainly gives credit for origination of the term to Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus tales. Or did the Post-Dispatch brass know Tony was quoting from Brer’ Rabbit, Brer’ Bear and Brer’ Fox? Hank is so widely known for his sparing but spot-on use of the term editorially, Tony should give credit where credit is due - and not toss it around haphazardly, lest it become as cliched as “mulling” and “ritzy” and “train wreck” and “art of the deal.”

I’m thinking Andy refers to this original usage from the Uncle Remus Tales, as borrowed by Mr. Messenger:

THE WONDERFUL TAR BABY STORY

“Didn’t the fox never catch the rabbit, Uncle Remus?” asked the little boy the next evening.

“He come mighty nigh it, honey, sho’s you born–Brer Fox did. One day atter Brer Rabbit fool ‘im wid dat calamus root, Brer Fox went ter wuk en got ‘im some tar, en mix it wid some turkentime, en fix up a contrapshun w’at he call a Tar-Baby, en he tuck dish yer Tar-Baby en he sot ‘er in de big road, en den he lay off in de bushes fer to see what de news wuz gwine ter be. En he didn’t hatter wait long, nudder, kaze bimeby here come Brer Rabbit pacin’ down de road–lippity-clippity, clippity -lippity–dez ez sassy ez a jay-bird. Brer Fox, he lay low. Brer Rabbit come prancin’ ‘long twel he spy de Tar-Baby, en den he fotch up on his behime legs like he wuz ’stonished. De Tar Baby, she sot dar, she did, en Brer Fox, HE LAY LOW.

“`Mawnin’!’ sez Brer Rabbit, sezee - `nice wedder dis mawnin’,’ sezee.

“Tar-Baby ain’t sayin’ nuthin’, en Brer Fox HE LAY LOW.”

And so on. I am a bit surprised the sensibilities of the Post-Dispatch aren’t offended by this throwback to racist-tinged literature. But I am assuming the Post-Dispatch and Mr. Messenger know the source material, even if it is not attributed.

Julie, Don’t get excited about non smoking casinos. Iowa passed a smoking ban every place except casinos. This because we cannot control the Indian reservations who don’t have to follow the law. This would hurt the state casnios, so no ban. Bad news!
