Green Party to finally get results of lead paint audit

ST. LOUIS — More than a year and a half ago, members of the local Green Party submitted a petition urging State Auditor Susan Montee to investigate the lead-paint poisoning prevention program at City Hall.

The Greens were successful — but, under state law, petitioners can only dictate the target of the audit, not the subject.

That is why over the last 18 months or so, Montee’s office has been pouring over the books at City Hall, releasing mini-audits on the city treasurer, the Board of Aldermen, the comptroller, the technology division, the personnel office, the parks departments, among others.

Today at 2 p.m., however, Montee will finally release the portion of the audit dealing with the lead program. The Greens have questioned whether the city is spending the lead funds in neighborhoods that need the most.

No doubt the party would have liked to seen the results of the audit before this year’s mayoral election — where the Green candidate received only 3 percent of the vote.

Better late than never?

“Better late than never?”

Just a coincidence of course…

I don’t get it. Are they upset they aren’t using enough green paint, or what?

Better late than never? How about, justice delayed is justice denied.

Montee is playing partisan politics with the audit, delaying its release to avoid harming her fellow Democrat during a general election. If the audit releases info that is critical of Slay, it will probably be watered down.

Montee labeled herself as a fierce watchdog to oversee the Blunt Administration, but she has morphed into a docile lapdog for Democratic administrations like Slay’s and Nixon’s. Voters should replace her in 2010.

Let’s be serious, Oracle … unless the audit reveals that Mayor Slay was writing checks from the lead abatement account, with his own hand, to bail his children out of jail on charges of selling crack in north St. Louis, this audit wasn’t going to have any effect on the outcome of the election.
