Bill Corrigan, a lawyer from Ladue, will announce plans Tuesday to run against Democrat Charlie A. Dooley for St. Louis County Executive.

“After several months of discussing the future of St. Louis County with friends, family and many others throughout the area, the consensus is that we must do better and I know that I can make a difference,” Corrigan said in a statement. “At this point in our history, political party affiliation doesn’t matter. Elected officials must work together to build a better St. Louis County.”

Corrigan’s statement does not indicate his party affiliation; however, he did give $250 to GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney two years ago.

According to a release sent earlier today, Corrigan, 51, will run a “positive campaign” focusing on the economic future of the county. He plans on making an official announcement tomorrow morning at the Kirkwood Community Center.

Corrigan, who works at the firm Armstrong Teasdalde, is the first candidate to oppose Dooley in next year’s election. Corrigan was also president of the Missouri Bar Association.

Don’t be surprised to see Corrigan put some of his own money into the campaign — the trial lawyer will have to play catch-up as he hopes to match Dooley’s $168,000 warchest.

In mid-April, Rich Magee, chairman of the county’s Republican Central Committee, said his party would conduct a search for a candidate to oppose Dooley. Among candidates Magee said his party is considering are former U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway, Chesterfield Mayor John Nations, Missouri House Budget Committee Chairman Allen Icet of Wildwood and former state Sen. Mike Gibbons of Kirkwood.

Magee also indicated that the party may seek someone without extensive political experience from the private sector — hence, Corrigan.

Some choice - a trial lawyer or Charley Dooley. Ugh. One thing’s for sure, though: For a big-firm partner with 25 years of experience, “matching Dooley’s $168,000″ will be as simple as writing a check. Mr. Corrigan certainly won’t be outspent in this race, and Dooley may suddenly find he has a lot fewer friends than he thought.

As far as whether Mr. Corrigan would be good or bad - I have no idea. He certainly couldn’t be as bad as Dooley has been. Indeed, as somebody with a particular interest in north county, I am shocked at the extent to which Dooley has turned his back on north county, from which he hails. Again, it would be hard for Mr. Corrigan to do worse than Mr. Dooley.

As far as Corrigan’s contention that “political affiliation doesn’t matter” … well, it’s a nice thought, and in a local race, there’s even an element of truth to it. But in the end, Corrigan must put a D or an R next to his name, and his choice will certainly make a difference. In fact, in addition to the contribution to Romney, Corrigan has donated to Mike Gibbons, Kenny Hulshof, and Matt Blunt. So I think we’re safe to say this will be a November contest, not an August one. And frankly, given the incompetence of the Republican central committee in fielding (and funding) an opponent to Dooley, an accomplished and wealthy candidate who is NOT part of the party machine might be the best thing that has come down the road in quite a few years.

I’m for A. B. D (anybody but Dooley). Where do I send my check?

Nick, Armstrong Teasdale trial lawyers are generally defense trial lawyers, not the East Side variety.

If this is what we have to look forward to, the future is quite bleak. The fact that this guy is an attorney means he has no ethics or morals whatsoever. They’re all just like John Edwards. What a joke. Just another egotistical piece of slime produced by Armstrong Teasdale. Remember that next time you see one of these pieces of garbage driving around in their $100,000+ cars. Remember: 98.5% of attorneys give the rest a bad name!!

jjk - He’s a plaintiff’s attorney. See his bio:

He doesn’t do class action suits, but he represents plaintiffs.

Ah,yes, Big time Concerned, and the remaining 1.5 of us lawyers count on, um, people like you to pay our fees.

Really, trying to insult some folk like Big time Concerned is like calling a clown funny. It is too obvious to be noteworthy.

Besides his neighbors in Ladue and at his upscale high end law firm, who does this guy have as supporters? Has he ever walked for a candidate or run for any office or even taken part in the political process? Does anyone in the Republican Party even know who this guy is? Never heard of him at all…zero name recognition. Being President of the Missouri Bar and a trial lawyer is more a Democratic trait than a Republican one…where does he stand on the Missouri Plan?

Where does Tim Hogan fit — in the 98.5% group or the 1.5% group ??

Nick,
I read his bio. While he does try cases on behalf of plaintiffs, the ones mentioned are commerical contract disputes, I saw several involving doctors suing doctor partners, not malpractice, etc. I would label him a corporate lawyer, not a trial lawyer. I don’t know the guy, but the statement that this guy is like John Edwards is unfair. John Edwards is pretty much in a class by himself. Unless someone else steps up, I’m sending a check.
