Blunt, left, and Carnahan

JEFFERSON CITY — Congressman Roy Blunt said the money would come, and it did. Stung by a poor first quarter of fund-raising in the battle for Missouri’s U.S. Senate seat in 2010, Republican Blunt bounced back and topped Democrat Robin Carnahan in the second quarter take.

Both candidates topped $1 million with their fund-raising take, but Blunt’s take of $1.44 million was nearly enough to put his overall fund-raising on par with Carnahan’s, who took in just more than $1 million this quarter.

Blunt and Carnahan both have raised more than $2 million in a race that some speculate will cost them each $20 million in campaign dollars before it’s all said and done.

Blunt has $1.7 million on hand compared to $1.3 million for Carnahan. The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza takes note of the Missouri race here.

Is she even still running? No wonder she got pasted so badly this quarter, she’s been spending more time naming her horse than actually campaigning.

Given Blunt’s obsession with Sarah Palin, I wouldn’t be surprised if Blunt spends most of that money on the outstate vote, demonizing Kansas City and St. Louis as “evil big cities.” That’s an extremely unwise move. Carnahan has name recognition and appeal among rural and suburban voters alike.

McCain got crushed in the suburbs because Palin came off as having a chip on her shoulder and despising people from cities and burbs. That type of open hostility towards non-rural voters isn’t going to work, but it’s probably going to get a second run.

And who is the biggest loser of all?

The citizens.

Blunt voted for the $700 billion Bush Bailout in October which gave billions in bonuses to financial executives….He also recieved more political money from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae than any Congressman in Washington.

I’m anxious to see how the candidates attack each other.

Hey he is in with all of the big rich Republicans so that is no surprise to me. He made a lot of pals in Washington. Some are of questionable character.

It’s really a shame in this economy that they are going to spend a ton of money for a race like this. Neither candidates are a good pick so they should probably just flip a coin instead.

Robin & Russ have never accomplished anything except for having a recognizable last name.

Blunt should do well with fund raising. He has completely forgot about his Congressional District. He has spent all of his time and energy touting the same old tired GOP party line without an original thought of his own. His courting of St. Louis and Kansas City has not sat well with those of us in his district in the south.
Blunt has far too much baggage, including his close ties to the GOP scandals.
He hasn’t served us well as a Congressman and certainly would only bolster himself and his pockets as a Senator.

So, when Carnahan outraised Blunt by basically this same amount last quarter, everyone proclaimed the death of Blunt and the coronation of Princess Carnahan… now Blunt trounces her… but I have little doubt the media will spin this as no big deal.

Hypocrisy much?
