Brew-haha: Mass. Congressman objects to Obama’s Bud
Neal
Controversy is already brewing about President Barack Obama’s scheduled beer summit today with Harvard professor Louis Henry Gates and the police officer that arrested him earlier this month.
The issue?
Obama’s choice of beverage, the longtime St. Louis export, Bud Light.
Budweiser, of course, is no longer an American brand, prompting one lawmaker to suggest an alternative to the president.
U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, a Massachusetts Democrat, wrote a letter to the president on Wednesday pointing out the acquisition last year of Anheuser-Busch by InBev, a Belgium firm.
Neal offered Obama assistance in obtaining some suds from the Boston-based Sam Adams brewery, or other smaller outfits in the Bay State.
“We both share a common interest in fostering the success of American-headquartered companies,” Neal wrote.
Still, even if Obama opts for a different brand, foreign brewers will be represented at the White House meeting.
As pointed out by Post-Dispatch business scribe Jeremiah McWilliams in our beer industry blog, Lager Heads, Gates will drink either Red Stripe, a Jamaican beer, or Beck’s, which is brewed by InBev.
Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley has opted for Blue Moon, brewed by Molson Coors, which was created by the merger of brewing giants based in Colorado and Montreal.

Much as it pains me to say it, I think that Rep Neal is right. The American president should drink an American beer, and Sam Adams deserves the “American” designation more than Budweiser, in light of the acquisition by InBev. The better solution, however, would be for Pres Obama to drink a Schlafley’s Oatmeal Stout.
Anything that distracts from the President’s latest gaffe and descent into racial demogoguery is probably seen by his PR flacks as a good thing. Good job training the spotlight away from the subject.
Petty nonsense. Like everyone else, Obama should drink what he wants.
I think this is the dumbest thing to worry about…..with all our problems and current issues…who cares? let them drink what they want!or better yet BYOB..geez people get a grip!
There won’t be any “Real Men Of Genius” sitting at that table
Rep. Neal needs a fluoride treatment.
Just saying…
So really - WHERE was this Bud Light born? The world wonders.
At least he did not choose a Tusker brewski…
Rep. Neal is an idiot. Why the the brewery sell? Because the Busch family and stockholders took the money and ran before Neal’s party taxed the hell out of it.
