Campaign in 24th state Senate district may be expensive
The Democratic primary for state senator in the 24th District in August 2010 shapes up as an expensive contest.
Dr. Sam Page of Creve Coeur, who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor last year, has $152,517.31 in his campaign war chest. St. Louis County Councilwoman Barbara Fraser, D-University City, has $59,241.84 and State Rep. Michael Corcoran, D-St. Ann, $18,571.93. Corcoran is in the state House of Representatives, Page and Fraser have served there.
Totals of the campaign fundraising and spending and details of the activity between April 1 and June 30 were in campaign finance reports the three filed last week with the state ethics commission. None are official candidates because filing for the Democratic primary won’t open until next February.
Page reported raising $250,000 and spending $96,132.69 thus far. He said he raised $92,885 and spent $67,147.91 in the reporting period.
Page, who specializes in pain management, received numerous contributions from doctors. Several companies of anesthesiologists contributed as did Novartis Pharmaceutical Corp. Also donating were political action committees representing AT&T.
Much of Page’s spending has been for fundraising and a web site.
Fraser said she has raised $69,420 and spent $10,178.16 thus far.
Her report said she received contributions from Larry Chapman, a partner in Clayco Inc.; Dee Joyce Hayes, general counsel for Metro; Laclede Cab Co.; McBride and Sons Homes; Public Eye Inc.; Peter Raven, director of Missouri Botanical Garden, and the political action committee of the St. Louis area Realtors.
Most of Fraser’s spending was for a mailing.
Corcoran reported raising $34,647.01 and spending $14,275.99 thus far. In the reporting period he raised $13,810.49 and spent $8,615.76.
He reported receiving contributions from Mayor Matthew Robinson of Hazelwood, and a local of the pipefitters union from Kansas City.
Most of Corcoran’s spending was to pay David Woodruff, a consultant.
Among quarterly reports to the ethics commission from members of the St. Louis County Council, Councilman Steve Stenger, D-Affton, reported raising $10,450 and spending $746 in the reporting period. He has $22,717.66 in his campaign war chest.
Among contributors were developer Drury Development Corp. and the political action committees for Enterprise Rent-A-Car and St. Louis area realtors. Stenger reported paying $4,000 to reduce his debt from his successful election campaign last year. He still owes $173,500.
The county council campaign committee for Fraser reported raising $111.72 and spending $1,331 in the reporting period. That committee has $4,297.12 in its war chest. Her spending was for legal fees.
County Council Chairwoman Hazel Erby, D-University City, reported raising $650 and spending $366.65 in the reporting period. She has 767.71 in her campaign chest. Bill Hannegan, who has campaigned against smoking bans in indoor public places, contributed to Erby’s campaign.
