Published report: Ill. AG Madigan won’t seek gov’s office or Senate
UPDATE, 3:45 p.m.: Here is Madigan’s statement at a Chicago news conference a little while ago, as presented on her campaign website.
UPDATE, 11 a.m.: The Post-Dispatch has confirmation (from a named source, Madigan aide Robyn Ziegler) that Madigan today will announce her intention to run for re-election to her current position.
UPDATE, 10:44 a.m.: The Chicago Tribune jumped in a little while ago with its own online report saying Madigan will seek re-election to her current position, citing unnamed sources. The paper doesn’t say whether its unnamed source is the Washington Post.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Washington Post is reporting this morning that Democratic Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan will run for re-election to her current post next year, ending months of speculation that she would either run for governor or the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by President Barack Obama.
The newspaper based its brief report on an unnamed Democratic Party source.
Madigan’s office has scheduled a news conference in Chicago for 2 p.m. today to announce her plans, but so far hasn’t confirmed the Washington Post report.
If true, the move would shake up the top levels of Illinois politics, setting up a smooth path to potential re-election by Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and giving state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias a much better shot at winning the Senate.
