Robin Carnahan radio ads: Public service or political pitch?

Carnahan

Listen to enough Cardinal baseball on the radio, and in between Mike Shannon and John Rooney, you’ll hear another familiar voice: Senate hopeful Robin Carnahan.

The Missouri Secretary of State, who is also the state’s chief regulator of financial securities, regularly runs ads during Cardinals and Royals games warning about potential investment scams.

The ad have the added bonus, of course, of helping Carnahan’s name recognition as the Democrat seeks to replace U.S. Sen. Kit Bond in 2010.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Missouri Republicans have heard enough. The party issued a release today saying they have filed a Sunshine Law request with Carnahan’s office for information regarding the cost and production of the ads.

“While we applaud any efforts to inform Missourians about potential scams, it seems that Carnahan is more interested in wasting airtime repeating her name than delivering quality, helpful information,” State GOP head Lloyd Smith said in the release. “The Missouri Republican Party hopes that our Sunshine request will shed light on any potential irregularities with these advertisements.”

Politicians gaining face time — or, in this case, voice time — by broadcasting a public service message is nothing new. (Charter Cable spots, it seems, feature a different state legislator almost every night.)

But, air them on Cardinal baseball while the team is in the midst of a pennant chase, and someone is sure to notice.

Who? Robin Carnahan? I remember her..she announced for the US Senate 8 months ago (via a You Tube posting) and to date has not taken a single stand on any issue that involves the position she is running for. How can anyone take her candidacy seriously or make any kind of judgement on how she might vote on various national US Senate issues when she is ‘the missing candidate’? In 8 months has she ever had a press conference announcing her stand on the Auto bailout, Cap and Trade, or the issue of our generation, the Obama Health care plan? Infact, she has never had a press conference where any reporter could ask her any question at all! Why did she announce? She is being given a free ride by the mainstream media and it is shameful how much they are in the tank for her.

Calm down, Red Leader. I’m sure the Post-Dispatch investigative team will be looking into Robin Carnahan, just as soon as they finish reading all of Matt Blunt’s emails.

My favorite part of the ad is toward the end - “Again - I’m Robin Carnahan.”

How do they know it’s a PSA? The ads could be paid. Sports broadcasts giving time to politicians isn’t in the producer’s playbook. Taking their money is.

Red - not to worry! She is a Carnahan, she will win. Remember the P-D is solidly behind her and will be sure to not report anything negative about her. She has what I term “The PD Protection Plan.” Such as, they didn’t even bother to cover Congr. Carnahan’s forum on healthcare althought it has been all over the Internet, talk radio, and cable TV. How odd is that?
Rush yesterday said that “the combined intelligence of all the Carnahan’s would fit on the end of a pencil.” You won’t see the PD covering that comment, but they will probably delete mine for just repeating what someone else said, so that should not qualify my comment as a personal attack, right?

The presumed democratic candidate for Missouri Senator needs exposure Blunt the presumed opponent gets plenty. Remember the democrats at least give lip service to saving lives while the Republicans do everything they can to kill. They are on the wrong side of every issue, pollution, guns, alcohol, tobacco, medical care, profiteering, fraud, and other forms of abuse. These people are a threat to our lives and security. They need to be dealt with quickly and certainly. The democrats getting their name out is small potatoes compared to the millions the republicans kill.

Frankly, it’s a smart political move. Notice I said political. All of these sleazy politicians use their current office to advance their political careers. Carnahan is doing the same.

To run a spot where you mention your name over and over for no cost to you or your campaign is smart politically even if it doesn’t pass the sniff test for intelligent people.

Thank God the GOP would never do anything so underhanded and so blatantly political. Oh, wait. Never mind, you tools.
