Butts out in St. Louis?

ST. LOUIS — Will St. Louis ever pass a smoking ban?

It looks increasingly unlikely, but, if it is to happen this year, the necessary action may come out of a hearing at City Hall today at 1 p.m.

Central West End Alderman Lyda Krewson has proposed a smoking ban that has been received as anti-business to some, and not strong enough to others.

The bill would ban indoor smoking at bars, restaurants and other places of business — but if only St. Louis County approves similar legislation.

At a pair of hearings earlier this month, restaurateurs Joe Edwards and Kim Tucci applauded the effort, while the American Cancer Society wants a bill with more teeth.

Even if the aldermanic Health Committee endorses the bill today, that’s not a strong indication of overall support from the rest of the board.

And, even then, it would depend on the county, which is reticent to act. St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley – who has to worry about businesses competing not only with the city, but also St. Charles County — has said that he prefers a statewide ban.

Lest you forget the United States government’s assignment is to secure rights to life, liberty, and happiness. Smokers are addicted to a deadly substance often before the age of majority or consent so to speak. This addiction causes life long problems to include job loss, health problems, and legal problems for many smokers. This addiction often leads to other addictions as is well known by most attentive people. This substance along with alcohol kills nearly 600,000 Americans yearly and has been doing so all of our lives. These substances are licensed, taxed, and subsidized by the United States government in direct conflict with its assignment. People using these substances are being unfairly unduly influenced they are not making decisions with a sound mind or body. The government with just these acts alone kills more people in a 21 year span than the NAZI holocaust some 12.5 million in a 21 year time span. In 21 years a person grows from infant to young adulthood you would think a government could.

The Mullarkey posted here is hillarious. However, I do not think your parody is really fair. Many will not understand that you are just trying to portray the rediculousness of the special interest tobacco erradication NAZI agenda (I will keep quiet on the fact that second hand cigarette smoke is only a tiny fraction of the total smoke a non-smoker breaths in - lets ban cooking too, its the number 1 exposure in every house- kills millions.)

I think Adolph Hitler said it best, its been awhile since I was in history class, but it went something like this - “For the benefit of the State, it is the duty of Government to enforce a fit and healthy ethic.”

It is truely sad that many have such a unlearned understanding of our great constitution. It affords individual rights. In contrast, Socialists, Fascists, and other forms of Authoritarian central government run society, insist that society (as embodied in the Government) rights proceeds that of the individual.

We will all have to wait and see how much further the “Change” transformes us into a government run society. You know, where they own, opperate and enforce- Banks, Auto Industry, Health, Energy, etc.

Remember Prohibition, and the reasons for its repeal, for if you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got. . .
