Tea Party in action

Grassroots or astroturf?

Say what you want about the “Tea Party” protests gaining momentum here and the country, they are catching attention.

After members of the St. Louis Tea Party coalition succeeded in heckling U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan at two previous events, the group “Organizing for America” — which evolved from President Barack Obama’s campaign committee — has sent a note to supporters urging them to attend the St. Louis Democrat’s town hall event tonight at Bernard Middle School in Mehlville.

Erin McCann, Organizing for America’s Missouri Field Director, writes in his e-mail today:

Our representatives are under attack by Washington insiders, insurance companies, and well-financed special interests who don’t go a day without spreading lies and stirring up fear. We need to show that we’re sick and tired of it, and that we’re ready for real change, this year.

Please come to the town hall, and make sure that the most powerful voices in this debate are those calling for real reform, not angrily clamoring for the status quo.

Of course, the local Tea Party is also urging its supporters to attend, which should make for an interesting evening. The event begins at 6 p.m.

Be careful if you go. Obama’s brownshirts are also calling in union thugs and other “community activists”. They will be looking to pick a fight so they can play martyr for the media.

They’ll be easy to spot. They’re the ones carrying the professionally printed signs with DNC and Obama.org logos.

These teabaggers are a sad lot. Not because they choose to practice their First Amendment right (yay for that), but because they choose to intentionally disrupt any meaningful discourse on the topic of health care.

They receive a sheet of talking points and marching orders from one of many conservative PAC groups who have them frightened, thinking government is going to ‘kill senior citizens’ or ‘make them have socialized medicine’ when all of them are on Medicare [as socialized as you get in the US] and just happy, thank you.

I believe all this fear and misinformation could be combatted with some hard facts on the issue. Like for instance; the United States spends 17% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on health care expenses, while other countries with single-payer insurance model (Canada, UK, etc.) commit only 10% of their GDP to cover their ENTIRE population! What exactly do we get for spending hundreds of billions of dollars more than single-payer systems? A higher infant mortality rate, and a lower life expectancy, not to mention a 36 ranking in terms of quality of healthcare compared to single payer insurance models. It doesn’t take an economics professional to realize that our current health insurance model is dreadfully inefficient compared to single-payer models, and desperately needs to be changed.

I know that everyone would like to believe the United States is best at everything(and a lot of times we are) but you must concede, given the facts, that our healthcare model must change.

Support single-payer!

everyone has the right to be heard, but you don’t have the right to be immune from being made fun of if you make foolish comments.

Case in point, many of the protestors have said things like “keep your government hands off my Medicare”

huh?

The event is not about the healthcare issue. Congressman Carnahan is bringing in resource groups to discuss taking care of aging family members.

‘Not about healthcare, its about taking care of aging family members’??? Maybe it’s just me, but that sounds like a healthcare issue… teabaggers should be ashamed if they disrupt this discussion.

The pro-reform crowd aren’t the folks making death threats, hanging congressmen in effigy, and making jokes about lynch mobs, Go_Fish. Teabagging is all fun and games till somebody loses an eye, and you guys are the ones coming to these meetings with pointy sticks.

This guy should only hope his representatives are under attack from Washington Insiders, insurance companies and well financed special interest groups. They are under attack from the American People of both parties who have had enough of the failure of Congress and political royalty. Heads are going to roll in ‘10.

No JJK,

It’s more like misinformed American people, organized by well-financed interest groups, funded by healthcare corporations, pharmaceutical manufacturers, conservative political action committees and conservative think tanks..

Why is that? Because Soros told you to say it? I dare you to prove your statement. I know dozens of people who attend these events. They are not controlled by anyone except maybe their wives. The big lie worked once for you in the last election. People are not stupid enough to believe it now that they have seen what it really is. I dare you. Produce one shred of proof. Do you see the professionally printed signs you always see from the left? Who is paying for them? This is what America looks like. Get used to it. We are taking the country back. Get it?
