Alderman French seeks to turn radio dis into fundrasing blitz

French
ST. LOUIS — Before winning a seat at City Hall, 21st Ward Alderman Antonio French was a campaign consultant and popular political blogger.
So he’s no stranger to political attacks — and launching a quick repose.
On Sunday, 104.1 FM radio host Demetrius Johnson — a former NFL athlete and well-known figure in local politics — ripped French on air for comments he made in yesterday’s paper about Paul McKee’s massive NorthSide proposal.
French, quoted near the end of a story by business scribe Tim Logan, suggested that McKee’s inability to get financing so far — two banks have signed up to help, one of which is defunct — may say something about the project’s viability.
That brief comment, apparently, got Johnson’s goad.
“Paul Mckee — if you don’t like what this guy’s doing, you don’t have to like it,” Johnson said on air. “I’m sick of these old phony politicians, these cowards like Antonio French.”
French’s response?
Later in the day, French sent an e-mail out to his supporters, attaching a clip (above) of the radio show, and asking for a campaign contribution to combat the “significant resources” of those attacking him.
“Listen, I’m approaching my 10th year in professional politics. This is a tough game. You have to have thick skin to survive and mine is like leather. So I’m not sweating the personal things that were said about me,” French wrote. “But these tactics demonstrate the level to which some will stoop to crush anyone who dares asks questions - no matter how legitimate those questions are.”

French is just mad because Demetrius Johnson treated him the way French’s buddy Lizz Brown used to treat everyone on her show. On a more substantive note, though, Antonio is completely wrong in his comment about McKee. Right now, EVERY developer is having trouble getting financing, regardless of the project’s viability. French would have done well to talk to a few developers before shooting his mouth off about McKee.
French was correct in his line of questioning. If the larger banks won’t jump on on this huge sweetheart deal that McKee and the corrupt city politicians are trying to sell so hard, why should we. There is still development going on even in these tough times. McKee is joke and the smart citizens know it.
Please keep asking questions.
Sadly, Johnson said alot worse than what is quoted in the article. He used a degrading racial ephitet to describe French and anyone else that decided to question the plan. What a pity. Glad to know what he really thinks about people that question the current policies of the mayor.
Sadly DJ is just a tool. I’m one listener that won’t tune in ever again.
Demtrius Johnson represents miscredant journalism and his ignorance of this issues merits introduction into the Guinnes Book of Records. He maligned every intelligent voice that has researched in depth McKee’s urban renewal and gentrification plans by professionals. He serves as a mockingbird for McKee who is obviously offered him favors although he used our children as his scapegoat, not mentioning one time it is these very children that boast he cares so much about, who will be the victims of McKee’s $1.5M relocation line item. Maybe Demetrius’ Foundation will build these kids affordable rental units out in his plush County neighborhood. Although someone did say he’s now moved in the NS, which is questionable. This is gentrification.
kissoff: Must I follow you everywhere to refute your ridciculous assertions? It’s funny that there are those who routinely poo-poo the City, especially the NorthSide but now that a right-wing money-spreader is involved, not only is N. St. Louis City a viable place for a multi-billion dollar investment….BUT ALSO HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS IN TAXPAYER GUARANTEES!!!!!! NO MORE TAXPAYER BACKED TIF’s!!! It would be funny if it wasn’t such obvious pandering. kissoff, why don’t you stick to inaccurate comments regarding your own city?
Nick,
If you can’t get funding, how is the project “viable”? From what I read, I think that is what Antonio was saying: “If they can’t get the money the project may not live.”
If Demetrius Johnson is for it, everyone else ought to be against it. He might think there’s going to be something in it for him? Never known him to have a responsible or reasonable view, nor one that wasn’t mean-spirited. Everyone wants the project to succeed, but not be bad for the city if it fails; and Antonio has right to his opinion without that garbage. Johnson has a right to his position, too, and we to ours. Antonio French not always right, but not usually a jerk like Johnson often (always, at least publicly?) is. Something seems wrong with him; he just doesn’t seem right. Just my opinion.
I’m just wondering why French is so against the same man that helped fund his run for office and now that he’s in office he is forgetting about those that made it happen. Just like all the crap he talked about the Mayor but stays in the Mayor’s face trying to get buddy buddy with him when he acting like he was such a bad person to get that vote.
Just like DJ is one to watch for some which I’m not sure why because you know up front what you’re getting with him but French is a big phony forever trying to front like is so for the people but then won’t even relate the people that he wishes to serve. French is a joke, a snake, and one that shouldn’t talk so loud before his own secrets hit the fan.
For the record: My campaign has never accepted a single dime from Mr. McKee or any of his many companies.
Let’s not get emotional, Antonio French has become a monster and simply has theh big head that can’t make it through the legs of the Gateway Arch. Surprisingly, Demetrius sometimes rubs me the wrong way, but he spoke some salient truths that actual hurt. North St. Louis needs to be revieved from life support. This is one plan that finally gets it and has numerous elements that will make it successful. It addresses commercial needs to bring all types of industry in; large and small businesses; infrastructure which is so badly needed in St. Louis, especially north, it addresses jobs that the people will have timie to prepare for and finally, it addresses homes. It’s about time we have low to moderate, middle and even some upper income homes on the city’s north side. Remember what we paid for gas last year. I want to live close to where I work. Get over it people, development finally has come. I keep hearing people talk about all the homes to be lost…have you taken a stroll over here lately? I was embarrased by my family as we traveled Jefferson, Cass and various other streets. The word they used was desolate…there are more vacant lots that have been there for years than occupied homes. Wake up people! It’s about time!
