Army veteran and educator set to challenge Emerson for Congress

Sowers
JEFFERSON CITY — Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau has drawn an opponent in the 8th District — an Army veteran and educator, Democrat Tommy Sowers.
Sowers announced his intention to face Emerson in a news release today. The news release — nor his Web site, www.sowersforcongress.com — fail to mention that the former special forces soldier is a Democrat.
Asked why, campaign spokesman Matt Hendren said, “No reason.”
Of course, Emerson lives in Republican country, and taking the seat from the incumbent will be quite a challenge.
Sowers lives in Rolla and teaches at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla).
From his news release:
“A fourth-generation Missourian, Tommy returned home after an 11-year career in the United States Army that included a peacekeeping tour in Kosovo, graduate studies at the London School of Economics representing Missouri’s Rotarians as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, two tours of duty in Iraq as a Green Beret, and his most recent assignment as an Assistant Professor of American Politics at West Point. He is now teaching at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla.”

His military experience is great, but he said zero about issues, and hides the fact that he is a Democrat. Sounds like Sowers is a pig in a poke.
More important than whether Sowers calls himself a democrat, is where does he stand on Democratic Platform issues? Where does he stand on universal health care? Where does he stand on Employee Free Choice (card check)? On the Defense of Marriage Act (gay marriage)? On global warming (cap and trade)? Demoocrats not not need any more DINOs (Democrats in Name Only). He portrays himself as a problem solver, ut we have no idea what he perceives to be the problems he intends to solve, and how he intends to solve them. His announcement provides no clues.
Gee…given that Republicans honor our troops, I guess that Jo-yann is in trouble, nicht wahr?
I still ask, is this guy a Democrat in Name Only? What are his stands on current Democratic issues? And gaydem, as we all know, Jo Ann works with both sides (voted with Skelton on Iraq). I think she’ll do just fine.
The students will certainly be able to tell us all who this man is. What do the students say about this man?
Actually Emerson does not live in Republican country, she lives in St. Louis, outside of her district. Her values are moderate, but she has been voting with the right wing republicans more and more. Jo Ann needs to return to her moderate roots if she wants to avoid challenges from moderate Democrats.
Sowers’ family are all Republicans. Seaver Sowers actually worked on Jo Ann Emerson’s D.C. staff. Turncoats and ingrates.
Hello, I am a former student of (then and always) Major Tommy Sowers. MAJ Sowers was among the most respected officers at West Point. As an instructor in the Social Sciences department, he was direct and remained on-point with his students. He remained apolitical as a teacher, allowing students to express their opinions, while critiquing their delivery and support. This is why I cannot comment on his political standing on issues; MAJ Sowers did not inject his viewpoints into our learning. What I can comment on is his integrity, command presence, quiet and humble genius (yes, genius), desire to serve, and aptitude for action. I am sure Tommy Sowers will clarify his stance on issues. Just give him a chance, regardless of party or stance on a single issue. He is going far in life and service no matter what, any of his students will tell you. Happy voting, Missourians.
Does VoteVets.org support Maj. Sowers?
Glad to know a student really liked him. But, where is he on core Democratic issues? I worry about a man who tries to hide his party affiliation. What is his campaign schedule so that we can ask him these questions? At least we know his primary opponent, Joe Allen, is a true Democrat, and not ashamed of it. Mr Sowers needs to come out of the closet with his true beliefs, too.
