Walk this way: Shimkus explains his early exit from Obama speech
The Shimkus shuffle?
No, he didn’t heckle the president, but Collinsville Republican U.S. Rep. John Shimkus has garnered some attention for his actions during the president’s health care address to Congress last night.
Shimkus walked out of the speech sometime before Barack Obama was finished.
Why?
He was fed up, a spokesman told the Tribune Co.’s D.C. blog.
“Congressman Shimkus was frustrated that the president was not offering any new ground and left with just minutes remaining in the speech,” Shimkus spokesman Steven Tomaszewski told the Tribune Washington bureau. “Regardless of the words the president used, the tone did not bring Republicans on board.”
For Shimkus or anyone else who missed the speech, the White House has made the full text available.
Did he walk out when Obama was reading Kennedy’s letter? If so that is just plain cold and rude, especially considering that Kennedy’s wife was there.
I also don’t understand how Republicans are planning to influence Obama if they are not even willing to listen to him. Not good politics…

It is easy to take a “principled stand” when your mind is already made up and your ears are closed. Shimkus could have stayed home and no one would have noticed, and that is exactly what he did not want — he needed to be noticed.

I would have walked out too. Obama’s administration and the socialist-democrats in congress are the biggest liars and the most corrupt in the history of our country. Also, the news coverge by SLPD, NBC, CBS, ABC, NYT, Wash Post and other socialist-democrat propaganda machines is the most corrupt in the history of our country. Not a Walter Kronkite among these unamerican news twisters.
The socialist-democrats in the white house and congress have refused to investigate ACORN, refused to take any action against Charlie Rangle (tax cheat having hidden $660,000 in one year) because Charlie is so well liked, and blocked the investigation of ex NM gox Richardson. Today the story about ACORN’s office in Baltimore broke, but the SLPD and others will probably “forget” to cover it. For those who may not know a “tax-advisor” for ACORN was caught on video tape helping to set up a house of prostitution, and told a young couple to declare they were performers on their tax form, and if they wanted they could just skip filing their taxes. ACORN is a very corrupt organization and Obama knows it. Since Obama came up through the dirty Chicago political machine and worked with ACORN Obama wants no investigation of it. We wonderful tax payers, courtesy of Obama, are about to give ACORN $6.5 billion dollars to do with however they wish. Our government is the most corrupt in history and is about to make millionares of many corrupt people. If we really knew just what Obama duties were with ACORN we would probably demand impeachment. Wake up American. Health Care is minor compared to the corruption in Washington, DC.and in our news media.

The GOP is going to far. The president demands respect- whether you believe in his stance or not. In our society it is considered extremely disrespectful to walk out like that. Don’t agree with him- fine, but (especially as an elected official) you have the decency to hear the speech out.
Tell us, Mr. Shimkus (I’m one who voted for you last time), what new ground do YOU have to offer? It’s not enough to turn your back and say no…that just make you look idiotic. Give us a real alternative, with real ideas to address the real issues.
