Candidates wait in the rain to file Monday in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - As the Post-Dispatch reported today, hundreds of politicians and political wannabes filed nominating petitions yesterday to get on the Feb. 2 primary election ballot.

It was the first day of a week-long filing period. So why the hurry? Two reasons: One, if you’re there at the opening of the first day, you get entered into a lottery to potentially get your name listed first on the ballot, which can actually mean something in lower-tier races in which all the candidates are unknowns; and, two, you have the chance to get your name out there in political blogs like this one.

Below are the initial filers running for governor, lieutenant governor and U.S. senator, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections candidate filing website. The list will certainly grow this week, with several major candidates refusing to participate in the opening-day stampede (GOP gubernatorial hopeful Andy McKenna is formally announcing later today; Republican ex-Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan’s people say he’ll file for governor on Monday).
