The campaign for a 0.1-cent sales tax for an emergency communications system in St. Louis County has drawn the support of some of the region’s largest corporations.

Voters on Nov. 3 will consider the sales tax. A campaign finance report filed today with the Missouri Ethics Commission shows that the campaign committee had raised $193,700.16 and spent $93,103.38 by last Wednesday.

On Friday, after the reporting period, the committee received a donation of $25,000 from the Regional Business Council, which includes large and middle-sized businesses. On Oct. 1 the council had contributed $50,000 to the campaign.

In reporting period of Oct. 1 through last Wednesday, the committee raised $87,700 and spent $61,747.74.

Among donors in the reporting period of Oct. 1 through last Wednesday, were the political action committee of Enterprise Holdings Inc., AmerenUE, Anheuser Busch Cos. Inc., Drury Development Corp., Paric Corp., and two labor groups, the North County Labor Legislative Club and the political action committee of the state council of the service workers union. BJC Health Systems also made a donation.

Most of the spending was for mailings.

The tax would raise $13.6 million a year to finance a program that would include an $80 million the countywide emergency communications system; $10 million for equipment to allow police and fire dispatchers to know the location of callers using cell phones and a $10 million upgrade to the county’s siren system.

Why the #### is AmerenUE contributing to a tax increase political campaign? As a customer aka. ratepayer, I think that stinks. Too bad we don’t have choice in electrical service provider here in Missouri.

Sad thing is, we just used the Christian Northwest ER this weekend to get our little girl stitches, and they were excellent. That will be my last visit to any of their facilities.

This just might be the one and only tax increase that I vote for. I hat it but like what it (says) it would do.

That said… where are all the anti-corp far left wingnuts complaining about the Evil Corporations having too much say in our government?
