The Ed Show: Outside bakery, Martin kicks off run for Congress

ST. LOUIS — There were no custom Ed Martin cookies when the Republican lawyer officially announced his bid for Congress Wednesday night in the parking lot outside of McArthur’s Bakery in Lemay.

The candidate didn’t even jump out of a giant cake.

But there was a healthy crowd of several hundred supporters eager to have Martin take on Democratic incumbent Russ Carnahan for the district that runs from south St. Louis to Ste. Genevieve.

Chief among his backers were Randy and Dave McArthur, the baking brothers who have voiced their ire about Carnahan’s position on cap-and-trade legislation, a proposal the cake makers say would hurt small businesses.

However, if Martin is going to pose a threat to Carnahan in a reliably Democratic district — this is, after all, Dick Gephardt’s old seat — he’ll need more than the “tea party” faithful who turned up last night.

That could be why that one of the other things not seen at Martin’s kick-off party were signs identifying him as a Republican.

Just wondering, how is it that you determined that it was only “tea party faithful” who showed up? I think you’re going to see Martin out front, getting into the issues. And Carnahan will probably follow his sister’s game plan: Avoid the public, dodge the issues, raise a ton of cash, and go negative a month out. And of course, since they’re Democrats, the Post won’t hold them accountable for this cynical strategy.

So now there’s two Carnahans vs. two Blunts. Interesting.

What was the crowd size?

My friend Nick hits all the bases, not the least of which is that Ed Martin like every other Republican, is running against the Post as much as he’s running against Carnahan. Jake sticks to the party… er… paper’s line, by minimizing Martin’s supporters (“tea party” faithful) and intentionally not stating the crowd size (must have been a fair size group.

As I said the other day if this election is on the issues Prince Russ looses.

You guys are all kidding yourselves. Regardless of what Carnahan does, regardless of what Martin does, regardless of the crowd size last night, regardless of how much money either of them raise, and regardless of what Robin does — Ed Martin loses. It’s a solid D district. It’s got nearly 60% DPI. Ed Martin loses. period.

Robin Carnahan recently spoke to over 600 Building Trades members about healthcare reform and the Senior Investors Protection Act at the Carpenter’s District Council. Several standing ovations.

I suppose if Nick keeps stating Robin is in hiding, he starts to believe it himself. The 1.4 million Missourians who voted for her know better.

I suppose if you’re looking for her at gun-shows, bible celebrations, and tea parties, she might be hard to find.

Wow, I have never been politically involved, I have never claimed a party and I have never attended a “tea party”. This was my first rally (other than one for my sons foot ball team)and until now I would have only somewhat agreed that most media is liberal. That said, Mr. Wagman, your statement “he’ll need more than the tea party faithful” is grossly misleading. I showed up with neighbors and friends alike whom I know for fact voted for Obama as they had sings in their yards and stickers on there cars. Maybe it’s time for the “Post” to quit dispatching opinions rather than the facts and keep the interpretations up to the readers. That said, Mr. Martin addressed issues that I have yet to hear Mr. Carnahan address….. ED MARTIN YOU HAVE MY VOTE.

If Ed “quick erase all of the e-mails” Martin is the “best” the Repubs have and he was afraid to even identify himself as a Repub, and, if this little piece of speechifying is his best, evne if Russ Carnahan stood silently by, Martin will lose the debate.

If people continue to support seedy characters as political candidates, as this Ed Martin, why would they expect an honest and good government? All these Christians including the McArthur, (Grace Church of St. Louis members) must know without a doubt that Martin is not an honest man and that that fact HAS BEEN PROVEN, OVER AND OVER AGAIN! SO DISAPPOINTING!

I think it is just more than the Tea Party folks, there’s talk about him on Campaign for Liberty. Carnahan doesn’t want transparency, he won’t sign onto HR 1207, that tells me I need to stop voting for him.
