Illinois primary filing complete: 13 for gov, 16 for U.S. Senate
UPDATE, 7:15 p.m.: We have what appears to be a final list of primary candidates for statewide offices. There are no surprises, other than the total numbers, which are even bigger than the massive fields that were anticipated. The hopefuls for the offices of governor and U.S. senator alone (listed at the bottom of this blog) total 29 candidates. -KM
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - If you’re thinking of running for the U.S. Senate from Illinois next year (and who isn’t?), you’d better get on it. We’re about an hour now from the final 5 p.m. deadline to file petitions for the state’s Feb. 2 primaries.
Illinois has a week-long filing period for the primaries, and where you are on the ballot is determined on a first-come, first-served basis. This has fostered a strange election-year tradition in which there are pre-dawn, concert-sized lines at the state Board of Elections office before the first day of filing, and again on the last day (the theory being that it’s best to be either at the top or bottom of a long list of names, not grouped in the middle).
At this writing, we have 14 people on the ballot for U.S. Senator from three parties (Democrat, Republican and Green), and 10 for governor — though two major Republicans we know are running, ex-Attorney General Jim Ryan and ex-GOP state chairman Andy McKenna, are apparently playing a game of chicken to get that last spot, because neither is listed yet.
Locally, Madison County State’s Attorney Bill Mudge and St. Clair County State’s Attorney Bob Haida both have filed for judicial posts, and both are unopposed at this writing.
The Board of Elections tells us we can reliably count on all their online lists being final by about 6 p.m. tonight. We’ll have a wrap here later in the evening listing the names of all candidates for the major offices.
