If you get an e-mail from the Missouri Treasurer’s Office seeking personal information to collect unclaimed property, watch out — it’s bogus, the treasurer’s office says.

State Treasurer Clint Zweifel issued a warning this week about an e-mail purporting to be from an assistant to the Missouri treasurer regarding unclaimed property. The e-mail is actually a “phishing” scam, Zweifel said, designed to trick recipients into providing personal information.

“Missourians should know that no unsolicited e-mails from my office regarding unclaimed property are ever sent out, and that my office never charges to return unclaimed property,” Zweifel said.

The treasurer’s office does indeed watch over the state’s unclaimed property fund — everything from abandoned safety deposit boxes to small refund checks — but typically does not offer individual notification alerts.

Those curious about whether they are owned something can check Zweifel’s online database.

Zweifel’s office say it has notified the state police and Federal Trade Commission about the phishing scam.

Note to your webmaster - you have a 1.8 mb image of Zweifel, scaled down to a size where it should be about 3 k. Resizing an image that much with html tags is bad, bad, bad.

I thought Zweifel resigned. What has he been doing all these months since he got elected. This is the first I’ve ever heard about him. Guess he’s just dialing it in. Should be ripe for a pick off in 2012 especially after tuesday’s elections.

Jason Crowell would make a great Treasurer.
