Marquette shortstop Grieshaber commits to Louisville

Special to the Post-Dispatch

It didn’t take long for Kyle Grieshaber to impress the University of Louisville coaches. And it didn’t take long for Louisville to impress the Marquette High shortstop.

Grieshaber was playing a tournament in Louisville with the Rawlings Prospects when he caught eye of the Cardinals head coach Dan McDonnell. Not long after, he received a scholarship offer, returned to make an unofficial visit and then committed to play at Louisville.

“I just got hot at the right time in front of the right people,” Grieshaber said. “I had a really good tournament in front of the head coach. It really worked out.”

Grieshaber, who chose the Cardinals over interest from Wichita State, Missouri, Illinois, Baylor and Arkansas, said he liked everything about the Louisville program, including the opportunity to compete for the starting shortstop position as a freshman.

“The fact that in 2007 they were in the College World Series was big for me,” he said. “The coaches were incredible. The head coach was an infielder, so he can help me with that. The hitting coach, their method is they attack baseballs. I like to hit. I like the style of play.”

As a sophomore, Grieshaber batted .464 with 20 doubles, 28 RBIs, 27 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. As a junior, he hit .500 with nine extra-base hits, nine RBIs, 20 runs scored and nine stolen bases.
