Westminster’s Turner tabbed for U.S. 18U National Team
Westminster High pitcher Jacob Turner was selected to play for the U.S. 18U National Team at the IBAF World Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada, from July 25 to Aug. 3.
A 6-foot-4, 205-pound righthander who will be a senior at Westminster this fall, Turner was one of 34 players invited to the U.S. team’s trials from July 10-17. The St. Charles native was the only player from Missouri invited.
The 18U National Team was picked after a series of practices, scrimmages and exhibition games. The 18-member squad includes seven pitchers, seven infielders, three outfielders and a utility player.
The Wildcats’ ace was previously picked to play in the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Game. That game will be played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Aug. 9 and broadcast live on Fox Sports Net.
Turner, 17, went 5-2 with a 1.45 ERA as a junior at Westminster this spring. In 48 1/3 innings, he struck out 92 batters, walked nine and allowed just 26 hits — holding opponents to a .148 batting average. He also batted .367 with five home runs and 21 RBIs.
