Westminster’s Turner shines for U.S. 18U team
Westminster righthander Jacob Turner struck out 12 in seven innings on Saturday to help the USA 18U team beat Australia 3-1.
In 10 1/3 innings for the team, the St. Charles native struck out 19 batters and walked two.
The U.S. team ended up winning the silver medal after losing to Korea in the championship game on Sunday.
Turner is one of the finalists for the Aflac national high school player of the year award, which was won by Holt’s Tim Melville last year. That award will be handed out on Aug. 8. The Wildcats’ ace was also picked to play in the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Game. That game will be played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Aug. 9 and broadcast live on Fox Sports Net.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Turner went 5-2 with a 1.45 ERA as a junior at Westminster this spring. In 48 1/3 innings, he struck out 92 batters, walked nine and allowed just 26 hits — holding opponents to a .148 batting average. He also batted .367 with five home runs and 21 RBIs.
