DeJuan Owens had two nifty runs, including a 5-yard toss sweep touchdowwn to the left corner of the end zone as Hazelwood East drove 46 yards in 10 plays to take a 13-7 lead over Raytown South.

The drive was keyed by a roughing-the-punter penalty that retained possession for the Spartans at the South 37. Three plays later, Owens broke two tackles on a carry to the right for a 14-yard gain, setting up first-and-goal from the 4.

Hazelwood East leads 13-6 at 4:44 of the first quarter.

The 13 points are more than East scored in either of its last two title-game appearances. The Spartans lost 34-7 to Hickman in 2004 and 28-12 to Blue Springs in 2001.
