Hazelwood Central’s championship in Class 6 and Hazelwood East’s in Class 5 makes it the first time since 1992 that schools from the same community have won titles in the same year. In 1992, it was Valle Catholic and Ste. Genevieve.
Coming into this weekend, St. Louis teams had lost nine straight championship games against teams from outside St. Louis. That streak reached 10 when Ritter lost to Cassville in Class 3 on Friday, then was stopped via Hazelwood East’s thrilling 39-33 win on the Hail Mary pass to Tarrell Downing on the last play of the game.
St. Louis teams, especially the large schools, have been hearing for years that Kansas City football is better. Well, it might be (it’s at least deeper at the top), but the Suburban North can again at least be in the conversation as being the best football conference in the state.
