Watch out for Althoff boys basketball…maybe
If Tuesday night was any indication, the Althoff boys basketball team will be one of the better teams in the Metro-East…maybe.
Against visiting Edwardsville, the Crusaders used a 12-3 run to end the third quarter as they erased a 34-26 third-quarter deficit enroute to a 63-49 victory over the Tigers in a nonconference game. Unranked Althoff improved to 2-0. Edwardsville, No. 6 in the Post-Dispatch large-schools rankings and No. 13 in the Illinois Associated Press Class 4A state poll, was playing its season opener. Will Triggs led the Tigers and all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Althoff looked like a beaten team as it trailed 28-21 at halftime and was down 34-26 midway through the fourth quarter. But the junior guard tandem of Devin Griffin and Alex Mumphard came alive and Mumphard’s jumper just before the horn to end the third quarter put the Crusaders in front for good at 38-37.
Griffin (16 points) and Mumphard (12) combined for 28 points and the duo were responsible for many of the Tigers 26 turnovers using their quickness to jump in the passing lanes. Althoff committed just nine miscues. Six-foot-four Carson Sonnenberg also added 12 points for the Crusaders.
“These guys don’t know they’re not supposed to win ballgames,” said Althoff coach Greg Leib, who preaches tenacity and the never-say-die attitude at both ends of the court. “So I hope nobody tells them.”

Mr Roberts,
I was at the game the other night between Althoff and Edwardsville, and I agree that both of these teams are pretty good. What I don’t understand is how you guys rank these schools ahead of Cahokia. If you ask any coach or player in the metro-east what teams are loaded, Cahokia will be at the top of the list. Cahokia beat Althoff three times last season and has three returning starters this season. In addition one of the better players in the 2010 class, Jarion Norris, returns to action after he sat out last year. Also, Cahokia recently competed in a holiday tournament with national recognition and returned with a 2 - 1 record. I think you guys list the same schools year in and year out without actually doing your homework and thoroughly assessing each high school program. I think you guys need to take a look at Cahokia’s team.
