East St. Louis wide receiver Kraig Appleton will not be participating in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday in San Antonio, a spokesman for the all-star game said Wednesday.

Appleton, who has made an oral commitment to Illinois, caught 28 passes for 657 yards and 10 touchdowns as the Flyers captured the Illinois Class 7A championship this season. Appleton and East St. Louis coach Darren Sunkett could not be reached for comment.

The senior wide receiver was one of four Flyers players selected to participate in all-star games.

Defensive lineman Ty Phillips and defensive back Tommie Hopkins will play in the third annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Friday. Wide receiver Terry Hawthorne will play in the Under Armour All-American Bowl in Orlando on Sunday night.

Phillips recently committed to the University of Missouri. Hopkins and Hawthorne have both made commitments to Illinois, but Hawthorne has been looking at other schools. He recently took an official visit to Missouri and told InsideMizzou.com that he will make his college decision on signing day.

Appleton has also been linked recently with the University of Wisconsin.

Gateway Tech tight end Sheldon Richardson and St. Louis University High running back Ronnie Wingo are scheduled to participate in Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will broadcast nationally on NBC beginning at noon. Richardson has committed to Missouri, while Wingo is considering Missouri, Illinois and others.
