St. Joe’s coach Matheny hits milestone
St. Joseph’s basketball coach Julie Matheny won career game No. 200 Wednesday in a 49-41 win at Cape Notre Dame.
Matheny is in her 10th season at St. Joe’s. She guided the Angels to a state title in 2004 and four other final four appearances. Her overall record is 200-68. She said all the credit goes to the school, players, parents and especially to her assistant coach, and twin brother, Bob Goessling.
“He’s been here with me,” Matheny said. “It’s No. 200 for him too.”
St. Joe’s (11-6 overall) needed a fourth quarter comeback to notch the win. The Angels trailed 38-33 after the third, but behind a 19-point effort from Megan Grace, St. Joe’s completed the comeback outscoring Cape Notre Dame 16-3 in the fourth.
It hasn’t been an easy year for St. Joe’s, which was been ravaged by injuries. Becky Handley missed the first part of the season with a hamstring injury, Ashley Hanlen is out for the season with a broken ankle and now Katye Nash will miss four to five weeks with torn ligaments in her hand.
“Change is a part of life, whether it is on the floor or off of it,” Matheny said of the injuries. “Change is always thrown at you. It’s how you deal with it and get past it. That is one of the life lessons these kids learn and it is one of the fun parts of coaching.”
And like most coaches, Matheny isn’t satisfied.
“I guess 200 is nice, but 201 will be even better,” Matheny said.

Congratulations and continued success. You are both great coaches and even better people. Thank you for all you did (and still do for our daughters).
Cogratulations I have watched many coaches throughout the years and I really enjoy your style. I have seen coaches distroy programs like Fort Zumwalt West Girls Coach and think she should call you for advise.
Have fun and keep it up
Congratulations. You should give credit to the opposing team sometime.
