Hoops notes: McCluer North makes SportsCenter
Bobby Peebles’ incredible buzzer-beating game-winning shot McCluer North’s 57-55 victory over Chaminade on Feb. 17 had to be seen to be believed. Fortunately, the rest of the world got to see it.
Peebles’ shot, which he threw over his head after grabbing a steal on the baseline, was the No. 1 play on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays recently.

The Stars’ season ended last week when rival McCluer beat McCluer North in two overtimes in the district semifinals. Peebles, a key contributor on the Stars’ squads that won the state championship two years ago and finished runner-up last season, averaged a team-high 15 points per game as a senior.
NORMANDY WINS SUBURBAN EAST
The Normandy basketball team had a strange season.
The Vikings lost their coach, Malcolm Hill, when he was promoted to the athletics director position at the school. But Hill ended up back on the bench early in the season after having to let go of the coach hired to replace him.
The young Normandy squad struggled to a 14-14 record on the year, but the Vikings are celebrating their second Suburban East Conference championship in three seasons, Hill said, after would-be champion Wellston had to forfeit league games the Trojans played with ineligible players.
LOCKHART NAMED MCC’S BEST AGAIN
Chaminade senior point guard Brandon Lockhart still has two more games left in his high school career, after helping the Red Devils advance to the Class 5 final four.
He was recently named the Metro Catholic Conference’s player of the year for the second straight season after leading Chaminade to its third consecutive conference championship.
In eight league games, Lockhart averaged 19 points, 5 assists and 3 steals, made 35.9 percent of his 3-point attempts and 86.3 percent of his free throw attempts. For the season, he is averaging 16.2 points, 5.7 assists and 3.1 steals per game.
GRIFFEY WRAPS UP IMPRESSIVE CAREER
University of Illinois signee Tyler Griffey entered high school four years ago with much fanfare and with college basketball teams already extending him scholarship offers.
The 6-8 forward was recently named the Suburban West Conference player of the year for the second time in his career — he also was so honored as a sophomore. In his other two seasons, as a freshman and a junior, Griffey was the runner-up for the award.
Griffey averaged 20.1 points per game as a senior and leaves the Lancers as the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder.
RAIMONDO WINS SUBURBAN SOUTH HONOR
Webster Groves has some impressive streaks going in the Suburban South Conference.
The Statesmen have won eight straight conference championships, 59 consecutive games in league play and have had the conference’s player of the year for the last eight seasons.
The latest is senior forward Vinnie Raimondo, who led a balanced Webster Groves squad by scoring a team-best 12.1 points per game in conference action.
BRENTWOOD HAS STRONG SEASON
There haven’t been many winning seasons in the recent history of the Brentwood basketball program, but coach Brad Kern and Co. turned in an impressive 2008-09 campaign.
The Eagles’ 18-8 record is just their second winning season in 13 years and is the best record for a Brentwood team in 18 years (the Eagles went 22-4 in the 1990-91 season).
Junior guard Tywan Brooks, who averaged 12.3 points per game, finished as Brentwood’s leading scorer for the third consecutive season and topped the 1,000-point plateau for his career in the Eagles’ season-ending loss to Maplewood in the district semifinals.
HILLSBORO WINS JEFFERSON COUNTY CONFERENCE
The Hillsboro Hawks had a season to remember, winning the Jefferson County Conference outright — the first time they’ve won a league title outright since the 1986-87 season — and finishing with a 23-5 record after winning 18 games a season ago.

Nate, thanks for mentioning the season that Brentwood had this year. It is tough to have people notice when you play in the same conference with the defending state champs.
The Brentwood team for the 2003-2004 season I believe also had 18 wins. That team went undefeated in conference that year as well.

Do you know who is recruiting Lockhart from Chaminade? I was surprised to see no offers listed on his Rivals page.
DV,
I believe Lockhart has a lot of Division 2 interest and probably some offers. The last Division I school I heard associated with him was Evansville.

Thx for the info, Nate.
I hadn’t seen Chaminade this yr until the Kirkwood game, and had I not known going in that Beal was the one getting interest from UF, KU and Mizzou etc., I would have thought for sure it was Lockhart - he was incredible in that game.
Beal looked great v. Parkway West though.
Beal does a lot of things as a sophomore that most high school seniors can’t do. He’s got a very smooth game and he’s already proven that he’s a dangerous scorer capable of putting up a ton of points if he gets hot.
The thing people don’t realize about Beal is that most games he is seeing junk defenses designed to slow him down — he often has a double-team coming at him whenever he tries to drive to the basket — and he’s still scored a lot of points this season. That is something most high school players don’t have to deal with until their junior or senior seasons, but he’s getting that kind of defensive attention as a 15-year-old.
