The McCluer girls entered the Class 4 state meet in the 400-meter relay flying under everyone’s radar. They were third in their sectional with a state-qualifying time of 49.54.

The Comets put up a respectable 48.68 in the state prelims on Friday, but it was only the sixth fastest time and relegated the relay team to lane seven. The lane assignment didn’t matter at all on Saturday when the Comets won the event in 48.42.

“We were thinking we could get first,” said sophomore anchor Jaronica Owens. “We realized it today when we were coming around on our third leg. It was our handoffs.”

Junior Brianna Evans led off the race and got the stick to Keidra Wade. Jaquitta Berry ran the third leg and is the only senior departing from the group.
