Hazelwood East entered the Class 4 state track meet as a favorite in every relay. And while the Spartans turned two relay victories into a team title, Parkway South was able to edge Hazelwood East in the 400-meter relay.

Sophomore Lawrence Scott found a late surge to catch Hazelwood East at the line. Parkway South, which used the relay to vault into fourth in the team standings, edged the Spartans 42.33 to 42.41.

“The difference was experience because we raced against them and beat them twice (this year),” said junior Alphonso Scott, who ran the lead leg. “When we heard in their sectional and district they were running 41.9, at one point we were a little nervous, but for the most part we were hungry.”
