Chaminade’s Beal selected for U.S. U-16 squad

Chaminade’s Brad Beal was among the 12 basketball players selected to represent the United States at the 2009 FIBA Americas U-16 Championship in Argentina later this month.

Beal, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, will enter his junior year at Chaminade in the fall. He averaged 23.5 points per game as a sophomore when he helped lead the Red Devils to the Missouri Class 5 championship.

“It feels great to be a part of this great group of guys,” Beal said in a press release. “These guys are really talented. We have a pretty talented group, so we should do pretty good when we go down there.”

The team is currently in training in Colorado Springs, Colo., through June 12. They will then travel to Mendoza, Argentina, to compete in the FIBA Americas event from June 17-21. The top three finishers there will qualify for the 2010 FIBA U-17 World Championship in Hamburg, Germany.

Also selected for the team were: Selected to represent USA Basketball at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship were: Justin Anderson (Montrose Christian School, Md. / Montross, Va.); Quinn Cook (DeMatha H.S. / Bowie, Md.); André Drummond (Capitol Preparatory Magnet School / Middletown, Conn.); Sterling Gibbs (Seton Hall Prep / Scotch Plains, N.J.); Brandan Kearney (Southeastern H.S. / Detroit, Mich.); James McAdoo (Norfolk Christian H.S. / Norfolk, Va.); Johnny O’Bryant (Eastside H.S. / Cleveland, Miss.); Tony Parker (Miller Grove H.S. / Lithonia, Ga.); Chasson Randle (Rock Island H.S. / Rock Island, Ill.); L.J. Rose (Second Baptist School / Houston, Texas); and Adonis Thomas (Melrose H.S. / Cordova, Tenn.).

“I love the makeup of this team,” said 2009-10 USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team head coach Don Showalter, who is the head coach of Mid-Prairie High School in Iowa, in a press release. “I think we have several players that play different positions for us. Defensive-wise that’s really big for us because we can have people switch and play other positions. I love the chemistry of this team. They really work well together, they seem like each other and they trust each other.”
