Most Missouri schools don’t start their boys soccer seasons until next week, but regular-season action is under way in Metro East. Some of Tuesday’s highlights:

* Sebastien Mertens scored 3 goals and Ryan Sleeper added 2 as Wesclin blasted 23 shots in beating Wood River 8-0.

* Gus Wagner, Jordan Luber and David Wiese got the goals as Triad blanked Granite City 3-0.

* Tyler Collico and Cale Ward each scored 2 goals for O’Fallon in its 6-0 win over Alton Marquette.

Tuesday’s softball highlights:

* Julie Kernen, Mackenzie Madigan and Maggie Ruckenbrod combined for 8 hits and 6 RBIs in 12 at-bats as Oakville smoked Howell Central 9-0. Remy Edwards pitched 6 shutout innings and struck out 9 vs. Central, which was a state final four team last season.

* Lexie Moore pitched five innings of one-hit ball and struck out six as Fort Zumwalt South run-ruled Lafayette 10-0.

* RBI hits by Abbey Gebhardt and Kathryn Gregory supported the 6-hit pitching of Katelyn Moeller as Incarnate Word Academy slipped past DeSoto 2-1.

* P-D Player of the Year Amanda Geile held off Ritenour’s late rally and pitched Parkway South to a 3-2 win. Geile allowed 4 hits and struck out 9. Teammate Sara Davison contributed 3 hits and 2 stolen bases.

* Summit ralled to tie in the bottom of the 7th, but Hillsboro scored in the top of the eighth and held on for a 3-2 victory behind the 5-hit pitching of Alicia Litviak.

Nice section, love to see more reporting on the prep side of sports. Especially for soccer and including the Metro East is great. Please keep it up.

Thanks, Joe. We’re committed to trying it Monday through Friday, and want to use it simply as a vehicle for drawing some of the kids’ names out of the box scores and into the spotlight.

For you and everyone: If you’re aware of a standout performance but it gets overlooked, feel free to e-mail me: mikesmith@post-dispatch.com
