Tuesday evening offers several marquee match-ups, including a match between MWAA White powerhouses as St. Joseph’s Academy travels to Incarnate Word at 6:15 p.m.

Both teams made it to state last season and are two of the most storied volleyball programs in the state. St. Joe’s state title in 2008 brought the total number of state volleyball titles between the two schools to 18. This season, the two are once again the teams to beat.

St. Joe’s (2-0 overall) lost to Incarnate during the regular season last year, but got the win when it mattered most in state semifinal pool play. Setter Krista Menghini leads the offense and has several good hitting options in Helen Boyle, Cat McGrath and Taylor Masterson.

Incarnate (2-1) is adjusting to its third new coach in as many years, with Darren Isaak at the helm. Isaak takes over one of the most talented squads in the state, which is led by Setter Megan Muesenfechter and Outside Hitter Emily Keaton.

Two other matches of interest …

Lafayette (2-1) travels to Oakville (3-0) at 5:15 p.m. in a match that could go a long way towards deciding the ultra-competitve Suburban West Conference. Both teams finished in a three-way tie for the conference crown with Parkway South last year.

Lafayette’s lone loss came against St. Joe’s, but the Lancers have rebounded since with wins over Seckman and Eureka. Lafayette runs a 6-2 offense, with Abbey Meier and Elle Kiely combining for 95 assists. Berkley Idel (4.10 kills a game) and Melanie Crow (3.10 kills) are the Lancers’ finishing threats.

Oakville suffered a major blow moments before its season-opening match, when Middle Hitter Sam Haegele blew out her ACL and MCL during warm-ups. But the Tigers have continued winning without Haegele. Emma Brydels (3.14 kills, 34 assists) leads a versatile Oakville attack along with Lexi Cibulka (2.57 kills) and Kristen Steinmeyer (24 assists).

Cor Jesu (1-0) travels to Althoff (2-0) at 7:15 in a classic Missouri-Illinois showcase. Both teams are perrenial state contenders in their respective classes and this year is no different.

Cor Jesu got off to a hot start under new coach Kate Caplinger with a season-opening win over Visitation. Althoff, under new coach Lisa Orlet, has wins over Breese Central and Marion and is led by Setter Carly Thomas.
