Borgia senior swingman Nathan Scheer made a verbal commitment to Missouri State on Wednesday.

“I was really looking forward to getting it done and out of the way so I could focus on the high school season and it seemed like a good fit,” Scheer said.

The Borgia senior said he also considered Wisconsin-Green Bay and Evansville. He took an official visit to Wisconsin-Green Bay before taking an official visit to Springfield last weekend to get a closer look at the Bears.

“It’s close to home,” Scheer said of his decision to play his college ball at MSU. “That was nice. I know kids from my school who go down there. It was nice to already know some people down there.”

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Scheer was a second-team All-Metro selection as a junior when he averaged 15.9 points and 5 rebounds per game and helped Borgia go 28-3 and win the Missouri Class 4 championship. He scored a game-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers, in the title game win over Kearney.

Scheer has started for the Knights since the beginning of his freshman season. He averaged 13.1 points per game as a freshman and as a sophomore led Borgia in scoring (18.9 points per game) and rebounding (5.7 rebounds per) and made 45.6 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Borgia continues to be one of the top programs in the state and also turn out Division I prospects. In recent years coach Dave Neier has seen players like Paul Eckerle (Saint Louis University), Alex Moosmann (Miami-Ohio), Luke Meyer (SLU) and Sky Frazier (Missouri State) move on to the next level.

Scheer becomes the third commitment for coach Cuonzo Martin’s recruiting class at Missouri State, joining guards Aaron Cooper and Corey Copeland from Arkansas. Copeland committed earlier in the day on Wednesday.

The Borgia senior is the fourth St. Louis area player to commit to play for Martin, an East St. Louis native who played and later coached at Purdue, since he took the job prior to last season.

Jerome Jones (Miller Career Academy) and Keith Pickens (Oakville) will both be freshmen at MSU this season. Former Vashon and Gateway Tech guard Derron Hobbs played in three games for the Bears last season before transferring.
