Illinois boys and girls state golf Friday and Saturday

Fourteen area golfers in three classes will end their high school seasons this weekend when they play Friday and Saturday in the Illinois boys individual state golf tournament in the Bloomington/Normal area.

Brett Denap (Granite City), Alex Flaugher, Devlin Keenoy and Dan Weiler (Edwardsville) and Nathan Nottrott and Colin Ahlvers (Collinsville) will represent the Metro-East in the class 3A tournament over the 6,926-yard, par 72 The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

The six advanced from Monday’s Pekin Sectional after Denap shot a 2-over par 74 over the 6,505-yard, par 72 Lick Creek Golf Course. Flaugher and Nottrott each had 76s, Keenoy fired a 77 and Weiler and Ahlvers carded 79s.

In the 2A tournament at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal, Wils Hawn of Waterloo, James Leopold of Althoff and Brendan Bargetzi of Highland will try to earn a medal. That threesome advanced from the Waterloo Sectional at Annbriar on Monday.

Hawn registered a 3-over 75 on the 6,517-yard, par 72 course, while Leopold also shot a 75 and Bargetzi had a 76.

In the 1A tournament at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, Drew Weisenborn of Columbia, Steve Souchek of Gibault, Jered Hogan of Roxana, Brett Guthrie of Piasa Southwestern and Danny Selby of Alton Marquette are in the field.

Weisenborn and Souchek advanced from the Benton Sectional on Monday where Weisenborn shot a 1-under 71 over the 6,400-yard Rend Lake Golf Course and Souchek carded a 73. Hogan, Guthrie and Selby made it to Bloomington from the Havana Sectional.

Hogan became Roxana’s first medalist with with a 2-over par 74 over the 6,748-yard, par 72 Shambolee Golf Course on Monday, while Guthrie and Selby each shot 79s.

In the girls two-class state individual tournament, seven area golfers will try to claim medals.

Caitlin Osborn of Edwardsville, Jae Yang of Mascoutah, Kristi Tschudin of Belleville East and Kelsi Wuller of Althoff will play in the Class AA tournament at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale.

The foursome advanced from the Althoff Sectional at Clinton Hill Golf Course on Monday where Osborn had a 76, Yang an 80, Tschudin an 81 and Wuller an 86 over the 5,500-yard, par 71 course.

In Class A, Suzi Johnes of Alton Marquette and Taylor Koeller and Abby Bergkoetter of Freeburg will play at the Crab Orchard Golf Club in Carterville.

Koeller (92) and Bergkoetter (98) advanced from Tuesday’s Anna Sectional at Union County Country Club, while Johnes (95) reached the state tournament from the Auburn Sectional at Lakeshore Golf Club.
