Wednesday district volleyball recap
Cor Jesu’s team motto is “Inch by Inch” and the Chargers seem to be taking it to heart.
Last night, Cor Jesu inched closer to the ultimate goal of a state championship by taking the Class 4, District 3 championship. Cor Jesu, the No. 2 seed, knocked off No. 1 Oakville 25-22, 25-17.
“Oakville is a great team and they have huge blockers,” Cor Jesu coach Kate Caplinger said. Lexi Cibulka “puts on a phenomenal block. We had to make runs and serve aggressively so we could run a good offense.”
Caplinger said setter Aubree Smith did a great job running the Cor Jesu offense and Meg Riley led the team with 13 kills, including several down the stretch. Katie Klages and Ilse Zenteno led a strong defensive effort.
Cor Jesu (27-6 overall) will play Jackson in sectionals at Kirkwood on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. If the Chargers win, they will play in the quarterfinal immediately afterwards against the winner of Lafayette/St. Joseph’s.
But Caplinger isn’t looking that far ahead. That would be a violation of the team motto.
“Inch by Inch,” Caplinger said. “That means not only taking it one game at a time, but one play at a time.”
