For Villa Duchesne, it was a case of sweet revenge.

Last season, Borgia ended Villa’s season in the Class 3 sectionals. This year, Villa returned the favor in the quarterfinals.

Villa (30-7-2 overall) topped Borgia 25-19, 25-20 and advanced to the state tournament next weekend in Kansas City.

“Any time you can beat a program like that, with nine or 10 state banners on the wall, it’s huge,” Villa coach Shane Weber said. “It’s a huge win for our program and for our kids.”

Aided by a strong passing game, Frankie Vain led the Saints’ offense and was a force at the net.

“As a team, our serve receive was really good tonight,” Weber said. “We were able to get her the ball and she dominated.”

Sydney Schneider and Lauren Davis stepped up in place of injured libero Shannyn Rudawsky, who tweaked her hamstring before districts. Weber hopes to have Rudawsky back for state.

Villa’s toughest obstacle actually came in the semifinals against conference rival Westminster. The Saints outlasted the Wildcats 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 in a tough match.

Villa fell behind 7-1 in game three, but took theĀ game over with a 16-4 run. The two teams had split the previous two matches this season.

“It was a typical rivalry match,” Weber said.

Borgia beat St. Dominic 25-23, 25-12 in its sectional.

In the other Class 3 Quarterfinal, Cape Notre Dame beat Rosati-Kain 25-19, 17-25, 25-23. Cape Notre Dame topped DeSoto 25-21, 25-21 in the sectional, while Rosati defeated Lutheran South 21-25, 25-19, 25-19.

In the Class 4 quarterfinals, Incarnate Word was pushed but not broken by Francis Howell in a 25-16, 21-25, 25-19 win.

After cruising to a win in game one, Incarnate’s serving game deserted it in game two. Incarnate coach Darren Isaak said the Red Knights missed three serves in a row at one point.

“Something we’ve worked on all year is serving aggressive to take our opponents out of their comfort zone,” Isaak said. “That was something that wasn’t working in that second game.”

Still, Isaak is glad Incarnate faced some adversity heading into the state tournament.

“I would rather them face that adversity now and have them fight through it, rather than having a walk-through,” Isaak said.

Francis Howell beat Francis Howell North 18-25, 27-25, 25-23 in its sectional.

In the other Class 4 quarterfinal, St. Joseph’s Academy outlasted Cor Jesu 25-19, 22-25, 26-24. St. Joe’s beat Lafayette 30-28, 22-25, 25-17 in the sectional, while Cor Jesu beat Jackson 25-8, 25-15.

In the Class 2 Quarterfinal at Hermann, host Hermann knocked off Orchard Farm 25-15, 25-14. Hermann beat Fatima 25-13, 26-24 in the sectional, while Orchard Farm beat Brentwood 25-11, 25-6.
