Saavy snacking

As we were warming up in our deep-water exercise class last night at the Y, the talk turned to doughnuts. And bagels.

(At this point, if you are a man reading this, you might be thinking, “huh?” If you are a woman, you probably are thinking, “of course.”)

Specifically, someone wanted to know how long she had to stay in the water to make up for the Krispy Kreme she had enjoyed at work that morning. She knew it contained 200 calories. That seems pretty reasonable, although we all know that those calories are as empty as can be.

I just checked Krispie Kreme’s web site and found out that an original glazed doughnut also has 12 grams of fat, 6 of them saturated, 5 mg of cholesterol, 22 grams of carbs and less than 1 gram of fiber. There’s no trans fat, something the company has been boasting about lately in press releases. I’m amused every time I think about a doughnut company bragging about its products’ nutritional profile.

I also checked online to see how many calories we might have burned. Self magazine says a 150-pound person doing water aerobics for 1 hour burns 285.76 calories — give or take a hundredth of a calorie, I suppose. That’s almost a doughnut and a half.

One Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut weighs 52 grams, less than 2 ounces. Pick up a plain bagel from St. Louis Bread Co. and you’ll be hefting 4.25 ounces. That’s the equivalent of 4 slices of bread! Eat the whole thing and you’ll have consumed 290 calories, 1 gram of fat and 3 grams of fiber. Want something sweet? A Dutch apple and raisin bagel has 370 calories, 3 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber. Trying to be virtuous? A whole-grain bagel weighs in at 4.5 ounces, with 340 calories, 2.5 grams of fat and 6 grams of fiber.

So what can we eat for a healthful morning snack? Fruit, of course, although it’s a strong person who picks up an apple or orange instead of a doughnut. Half a bagel, if we apply the low-fat cream cheese sparingly. When I’m hungry between meals I like to grab a Luna Bar. My current favorite flavor is Blueberry Yogurt (I have two in my desk drawer right now). One bar has 180 calories, 4 trams of fat, 2 grams of sat fat, no cholesterol, and 5 grams of fiber that keeps me full. Plus, it tastes good.

What are your snacking solutions?

As a registered dietitian, I love to eat fruit or yogurt plus a whole grain for breakfast. Some examples are high fiber cereal, whole wheat toast or mini wheat bagels plus a light yogurt or tennis-size piece of fruit. Good luck!
